The Fishing Thread

Was about 20 years ago but was deffo white rock where he caught it.
Gordon happer helped him land it.
29lb something it was.

Might have been another biggie caught but only heard of chappas
Yes it was another one slightly smaller than Alan's , Think the lad was from Hebburn was fishing the Wherry pretty sure he was using a fillet of mackerel as bait.

No I fished with Alan a few times. I only fished matches. And made the top 100 penn points league.
My fishing partner was Andy Rutherford.
Ah i was in Whitburn angling club
Must have been a canny angler to fish with Andy mind.

Miss the rock fishing up there although, them silver dogfish are canny on the holderness.

Ah. Big fish. Good shot the Wherry. Must be one of the biggest off there.
Mark Rodgers had a 16 pounder off there but that was in the 90s.

He’s a great angler. People think it’s because of the shop but the shop holds him back. He can’t travel for comps etc.

Anyone remember the Bulmers? They used to fish for The Toll Bar when competitions first became popular. I fish against Arthur Bulmer in the 70's, same place, same tackle, same bait as far as I could make out but he kept pulling fish out when I wasn't even getting bites! Some people just have the knack.

Was still fishing the cliffs at ryhope last time I heard.

Suppose he gets the best bait but it's knowing where to put it.
I never really associated him fishing the rough ground.
I know he does well in the river comps for flatties etc & he's had some canny cod off Marsden beach.

We did well from all the marks at marsden. I won the ryhope from the black path and he won the welcome open from the trolls bridge. But you are right, pegged matches in the wear were his bread and butter.
I fished with Kenny McCoy too for about a year, he’s now fishing for England.

It that still classed as Sea Fishing Mate?

A few years ago I fished a competition which was pegged at Newcastle Business Park. That’s god knows how many miles up the Tyne.

Size 4 hooks and basically it was just all eels. Traces ruined every chuck.

I can’t stand eels.

First met Kenny when we were about 15, fishing an under 16 match opposite the Golden Lion in the Wear. Him and his dad used to fish for Sunderland Busways, while I was in In Sunderland SAA - fished with him a couple of time during that time. There was a great club scene then in the early/mid 80s, with some very good anglers. Arthur Bulmer has already been mentioned (I'm sure there was a bit of a cloud over him in one match over what he'd weighed in - might be mistaken), but there was also Colin Smith and Wilfy Warwick around the same time, then Les Bolton and Johnny Bradley later on.

Agree with you about Andy though, very good angler, knows his stuff.

I'd rather pack up and go home.
