Sam Fender

People have said he wasn't interested in football. Similarly, my misses has very little interest in football but if asked who she supported would say Sunderland because that's who all the family support.

Theres a lot of people like that. The point being is they won’t go on like they’re the world’s biggest die hard supporter, then use that as their whole selling point.

There’d be a lot more credibility to his whole Geordie act if he had genuinely been a huge nufc fan. Or even if he hadn’t made such a big deal about social injustice etc in his earlier songs.

It weird how a few on here cling to this, yet would claim any part of County Durham as Sunderland FC territory.

Some people claiming he was never a Newcastle fan, he went to John Spence High, I have nephews the same age live round there who know him, he has always been a Newcastle supporter.

I am old enough to remember when a considerable number of people from Sunderland would call themselves Geordies, there is no hard and fast definition, it's just since the rise of the internet and the desperate need to seek a separate identity that this change has become a thing.
It's been done to death on here, but when I was a kid in the 50s the term 'Geordie' referred to anyone who lived in the Northumberland/Durham coalfield. It essentially meant anyone from north of the Tees to the Scottish border.
John Hall's Geordie Nashun and a load of sheep have a lot to answer for!
Fender is an idiot for trading a shot at worldwide success for some cheap adulation, because I don't think the Saudis will persist with the Mags when the going gets tough, so Fender won't be riding that particular pony very far.

wasn't the story on here that he has a security detail around the clock to stop him getting his little mitts on a certain substance iirc there

He's far too tied to the small town parochialism to make it really big, which is a shame because he's got the talent to be a global star. His merchandise is properly embarrassing professional geordie stuff.

If anyone's hoping he's not gonna be a major star then they are going to be massively disappointed. Just because Sunderland fans are annoyed about the Newcastle thing doesn't mean the other 99% of the country gives a fuck.

If he hasn't headlined Glastonbury by 2030 I'd be amazed.

I’ve said this about him on all these threads.

He had no interest in football up until the age of 18 by a mate who was his tutor at school.

His love of football coincided with the takeover and his management company promoting the over the top mag love

About 8-9 months before the first offer came in from the Saudis.

It’s funny to wind up mags you know from north Tyneside/ North Shields by saying they are not from Newcastle but it’s just to them what like seaham/easington is to us.

My son and his girlfriend really like him but refuse to go to see him in Newcastle because of the mag fest ( they live in Jesmond ). They’re going to Leeds to see him I think

Indeed. If you see him playing outside the region he barely mentions it.

Like I said, even if he ends up touring his early hits round smaller venues, he will have done very well for himself.
