Alexandre Mendy (transfer rumour)

"After four years in Caen, Alexandre Mendy wants to turn the page. But what Sunderland, with whom he very quickly reached an agreement, is offering to buy out his last two years of contract is out of all proportion to the expectations of the Malherbes. Less than a million euros for the top scorer in Ligue 2, who currently has no replacement, is a no. "For a transfer to be made, everything has to come together and everyone has to be happy," recalls Romain Thomas. "There is a party that is not happy."

Usual skinflint stuff from KLD.

Anyone else thinking some other club might think Mendy's worth a punt at 3-4 million Euros and jump in for him?

Still, there's always some PL or Championship U21 second string out there we can loan for the season if we're gazumped.

Not like KLD and Speakman want promotion, is it ?

It’s time to move on, surely. We can’t be waiting round till deadline hoping they blink first.

He’s either too much and we move on, or we start to up our offer. We’ve had all summer to get a deal done and it looks as far away as ever.

Av said from the start wouldnt surprise me if someone offers near to what they want and he ends up there.

If thats true then £800k for theirs and the league’s top scorer is a piss take

Not sure we have much choice now, deal agreed with a player who is clearly our first choice and literally just missing an agreement with the club. Doesn't appear to be an alternative on the horizon and look how long this is taking and we have less than two weeks.

They have doubled down on Mendy, again no plan b

Do you mean much choice - as in move on, or keep haggling?

I get all the “get the best deal” etc. but don’t lose sight of the big picture. If this guy is the one they want and they think he’s worth up to say £2.5mn. It’s time to put the money down. It’s becoming obvious they aren’t going to be lowballed.

Up to Sunderland now, go in with what you’re prepared to pay and give it a deadline for next week. Then we’ve got to move on…

Yep. Bit shit isn't it...

Exactly this. We either think he’s the answer to our problems or we don’t. The new owners aren’t going to be lowballed, as you say so, if we don’t regard him as worth probably the going rate for the league’s top scorer at a club now not in financial bother then move on.
If we think he’s only worth £800k then we probably don’t want him here anyway.

Obviously we don’t want to pay over the odds but we also have to live in the real world.

Suppose it’s easy when it’s somebody else’s money? Tell you honestly even if I had millions I still wouldn’t pay more than I’m told by professional advisors that something is worth.

Agreed. I don't see Caen caving in.
Mbappe is the majority shareholder and put 15-18 million Euros in.
He's not exactly skint and going to roll over for us for pennies.
Embarrassing as well for Mendy that we're such cheapskates.

I know mate - it’s easy to get lost in trying to “win” the better deal. I always think you’ve got to keep an eye on the big picture. We are so bloody desperate for a striker capable of scoring goals and holding the ball up on this league.

It’s pretty worrying if we don’t have £2mn for a player who has went public about coming. Where did we find money for Hjelde and Mundle, who are not ready for the first team (I’m being kind to Hjelde).

Im buzzing for the match tomorrow but this has gone on far too long it’s just pathetic like.

I think we have to keep haggling, I don't think it's worth moving on to someone who is not particularly on our radar over the sake of this relatively small valuation difference.

It'll take ages to get to the same point with an alternative, who might not be as desperate to sign. This is referring to am experienced permanent arrival btw, not a loanee. The time to chase that alternative is gone, we've waited this long and we're going to have to see it out.

But surely if we don’t think he’s worth what they are wanting then we should be moving onto someone else mate?
