The Spirit Of 37 - Upcoming displays

I don't think the fans want it either tbh.

When you've got fans in the home end turning up their nose up at holding something or joining in you've got no chance. Everyone in that end should be on board and should understand the culture or move somewhere else in the stadium. Being shit is no excuse otherwise this sort of thing would be exclusive to the elite clubs who aren't shit.

Most clubs that have got this sort of thing off the ground have groups of 20-30 lads that live and breathe the culture.
That kind of culture within our fan base has been dying out with the club over the last ten years and a lot of support (away too) is made up of Roker report happy clapper types

It's the happy clapper types that are required for this sort of thing. They never stop supporting for 90 minutes because they see it as a duty. They give up hours and hours behind the scenes to prepare and plan different visuals in the stadium because it's their duty. Too many of our fans in the home end just head for the exits after 25 minutes if we haven't scored. Imagine the lads standing with the Holmesdale Fanatics just heading to the pub if Palace don't score in the first half?

Holmesdale Fanatics...sorry like but it's just a constant drone.

and that's the exact attitude we're up against.

"but the drum..."

Completely ignoring the new, fresh chants every season, completely ignoring the standard of visuals and tifos, completely ignoring the camaradrie in the home end and the constant 90 minute support for their club.

Their support "get" the culture and have been willing to move with the times.

Our support get up and go the pub because "wa shite".

We've an excellent away following, held in pretty high regard around the country. At home we're a laughing stock.

The more happy clapper types are exactly the people needed to make this work. If you’re paralleling it to fanzines, it’s not working because there are too many people like the lad off WMS who thinks the pre Wembley crack at at Trafalgar Square is pathetic, rather than people who literally support the club.

..i don't get up and go to the club at all. Were you there full time on Saturday or 1-5 at home to Blackburn...??

Yes to both.

The gates were opened at half time on Saturday and hundreds were piling out.

There's just not the culture at Sunderland for anything like SO37 to become successful and we'll be the only club that hasn't moved with the times within the next 5 years.

Do you expect the fans to stand there and sing like fuck after the 45 mins on Saturday when the players couldn't be arsed to even run at times??

I can see both sides of the coin when it comes to the way ultras support their clubs.

For 90 minutes they’re non-stop massive supporters, which is difficult to do when you’re getting beat. Some of the performances we’ve turned in this season I could barely be arsed to stand up.

The flip side is that the players know they’ll get backed, but they’ll be told when it’s not good enough either. Examples of fans going on the pitch and telling the players etc.

Sunderland just doesn’t have that sort of culture.

I don't think we ever will either. It's great that lads are trying to improve things and they put a lot of effort in but ultimately, imo, they're fighting a losing battle

We sell tickets in huge numbers at home but the atmosphere / support in the ground is largely poor. I don't really understand why anyone thinks it's good. Aye, the football this season hasn't given us much to sing about but I thought the atmosphere for large parts was poor at home last season also and many years before that. For example, even in the PL days there's only a couple of games that really stick out where the SoL was properly loud (Chelsea at home under BSA for example). Away fans are second to none but it doesn't translate at home at all. Also very difficult to generate a good back and forth atmosphere with the away fans where they are.
