When I first started going to gigs it was considered "Not cool" to wear a t shirt of the band you were watching at the time.

Has society moved on from this?

This seems to be the practice at the vintage/reformed band gigs I occasionally go to in London. At a Skids gig there were loads of ... ahem.. more mature men and women .. in Stranglers, Clash, Ruts etc.. t-shirts. It was like saying "I'm a serious fan, not a part-timer or late-comer" :p
