How come so few people turn up for midweek games?

Looked about 25k there tonight. Empty seats everywhere, front of the North Stand virtually deserted and it all made for a terrible atmosphere. Team was poor but playing in front of that wouldn't have motivated them.

Going back to the Roker Park days, more often than not that was when the old place was at its best. Most of the best atmospheres I remember at Roker Park were night time games. It always felt better under the lights. A bit more magical. Have to say they are horrible now. Absolutely soul destroying again tonight.

Havay man get behind the lads no matter what day we play! Top 6 still very much there for us but everyone has to do their bit!
Agree with the Roker Park night games being kinda magical but times have moved on n with the firestick tv ya can easily stay at home n watch games if it’s more of a dash to get to the game for whatever reason.
Plus you’ve got Xmas around the corner and money will be even tighter for people.
As for the team needing motivation, is wearing the shirt n getting paid thousands every week not enough.
Yes the fans do help n stir the team on but 25k on a freezing December night against a 4th bottom team is a good turn out.

As for money being tight, I have said all along that your average football fan is immune to the cost of living crisis. Attendance at matches is at an all time high. Rotherham, a club of traditionally small crowds with negligible away support, brought a decent away following.

We have more exiles than people think

Hey man , i drove a 5 hour round trip in black dark & sleet and spent £40 on fuel to freeze watching an absolute pile of shit when i could have watched it on red button with a can .
If they dont fuckin frame there will be one less at midweeks before long.

I feel the same. About 3.5-4 hours round trip for us and not getting home til midnight.

If my lad hadn’t wanted to go I would have happily watched on TV but he did and I didn’t really want him driving there and back on his own.

Am seriously considering what to do for the Leeds match tbh and that isn’t one I would normally want to miss.

If we're still shite im not doing the drive . We're at home following on the 23rd , ill think hard about the extra £40 .

Continue playing like they did last night and there’ll be a canny few more empty seats.

Do you have any concept of the public travel situation regarding getting to Sunderland of an evening, during the week?
When you do, you may not start as many daft threads
It's a massive f***ing ball ache when the buses are on, the fact massives of our fans can't use public transport at all to get to the sol ATM if I didn't manage to snag a lift it would've been do I spend even more money on taxis or do I give it a miss stay warm and watch on TV the club already have my money anyway.

Some of us travel a distance and it's not brilliant getting home after midnight for a home game.

We have had exactly the same debate on our site. The announced official attendance is nothing like the actual number in the ground. Tuesday night our attendance was announced as 10,600 when in reality there were around 7k in a morgue like Valley. Clubs include all season tickets sold in the announced attendance , whether they attend or not. A freezing cold night and the temptation to stay in the warm and watch the game for £10 on a stream is enough to put a few off bothering.

It was -20
Busses on strike.
We are dour as fuck to watch

There are millions of reasons not to go when it’s like last night.

Ps. Guarantee you didn’t sing your heart out for the lass once.

It wasn't -20. Yes it was cold but I stuck an extra pair of socks on, my big coat, a hat and a scarf and it was fine. Been to far colder games at the SoL over the years.

We were dour to watch yesterday but that generally hasn't been the case the last 2 years so I'm.not having that one either.

You're right on your last point. I didn't sing to my lass when I returned home.

Exiles can't make midweek. Its exhausting.

Maybe, just maybe people didn’t want to go?

It is a choice after all.
