Russell Martin has Ross Stewart as his main target **Transfer confirmed **

Yes, we can.

There’s no suggestion whatsoever that Southampton are offering anyone anything other than Southamptons own fair assessment of their worth.

The idea that Southampton are running around offering “silly money” to anyone is for the birds. It’s completely contrary to the way they’ve done their business for over a decade now. The idea that they’re offering some sort of silly money is nothing but a comfort blanket for those who still want to ignore the evidence of what’s happening regarding investment at SAFC - both on and off the pitch,

If we can’t pay the going market wage for one of our own best players, we’re in serious bother. It’s a recipe for - in the best case - stagnation.

Southampton were one of the biggest spenders in the PL the past season, spending £150m, and went down.

In the last 12 months alone they have had big money PL flops in Sulemana, Onuachu, Bazunu and Mara, and lesser money but still significant flops in Caleta-Car, Edozie, Aribo and Mara.

Only Lavia and Kotchap were in any way decent of their 15 signings the season just gone.

They aren't the model of financial acumen that you seem to think they are, certainly not these days.

Honesty I wouldn’t put it past them to get Rusyn in and then let Stewart go an hour or so before the end of the window try and get someone on loan fail to do so, and then do a podcast a week or so later and say well we had a go, but just couldn’t get it across the line, let’s now all get behind them and wait until next summer, And see where we are

I’ll ask you again.

Can we compete financially with Southampton?
We can but we choose not to

If the club only want 9 then he’s away
He's away anyway if he won't sign, for nowt. He's not played for almost a year, so to expect him to be shit hot before Xmas is hopeful in the extreme I'd say.

If the money is there, at or over 8 million then as others have said, get it in and, hopefully, back out again with an adequate replacement - and there's the difficulty of course.

There's nowt new on these threads or people's opinions ... some will crow, some will mock some will repeat ad-infinitum and some will just talk total shite, knowingly or because they somehow believe it.

Interesting to see what happens though, and new lines drawn and blame or praise apportioned.

Shame if Ross does go but we have survived ages without him since when he got injured last season, when he does come back there are questions over him with his injuries and he could easily get injured again the way he grafts and puts himself about in matches, a quality forward for any championship team but if we got 9m with add ons and he won't sign a new contract here then for me it is thanks for the memories Loch Ness Drogba and wish you the best at your new club.

If he does go I hope speakman has targets and prices agreed because then we are in the position on needing at least one striker desperately at least and the selling clubs know we have a little cash on the hip, so may well chance there arm as the 48hrs left on the window ticks on

Nobody said silly money did they? If Stewart wants 30k per week, can we compete with Southampton and pay it? Can we pay Mason Holgate 72k a week?

They are doing what we do with a bigger budget. Nearly all those signings were bought to develop and that was the criticism they got. Because they were over reliant on developing players in the hope that would give them a gain on rivals in the long term with a blind eye to the short term. But because they were so engaged in that side of it, they didn’t have the experience, ability or mentality in for the level they were playing at.

Though they still sold Lavia and Livramento (after hardly featuring for any of their games this season) for about a 60 - 70 million profit.

You’ve said yourself going up and being relegated on zero points would be a success in the long term because of the cash it would bring to build on but using Southampton being relegated, using a very similar model to what we are, as a failure in the long term despite them being one of the favourites to go back up again because of the players they have signed.

And bizarrely the kicker is Ross Stewart.
