The Safety of Fans in the North Stand

Very much worth bumping this thread from our resident Hull fan. Quite obvious that even the measures they've put in place aren't being stringently applied. It's absolutely no wonder that stuff is still getting in, and still being flung. You can't tell by looking at someone if they need to be searched, and we can't expect them to literally search every fan. So, if the away fans are staying where they are, which we know they need to for at least the next season, there simply has to be a net or similar in place.

Prior to the Hull match I was walking along Fawcett Street behind 3 Hull fans (2 adult males + 1 boy of about 12 years). The boy cracked open an orange smoke bomb and chucked it behind himself (in my direction) after about 30 seconds. His Dad and friend thought he was class and the 12 year old clearly though he was hard as owt. There were very few Sunderland fans around so there was no reaction as such.

I presume this was the same little scroat who lobbed the smoke bomb inside the North Stand Upper. Good job his sparrow arms couldn't throw far enough to clear the front wall.

This 12 year-old would not have been searched for pyro at the turnstiles,

Has there been anything from the club into RAWA or the supporters group in general?

Quick look on a Birmingham forum, one mentions that when he got to the turnstile they’d stopped searching

Oh and someone has also contacted the club and asked how much money was confiscated and what charity it went too

I was talking to a Birmingham fan after the match as he asked me where the nearest shop was. He said he wanted a lighter as he had it confiscated at the turnstiles plus coins. He couldn't believe it but in his own words said "our away fans are horrible mind."

I am also worried that the EFL or other authorities could impose sanctions on our club for repeated failure to eliminate the problem.

Not that I'm aware of. I've just messaged RAWA to note that it's disappointing that we haven't had any comment at all, will see if there's been anything recently but like I say, there's been nothing so far that I'm aware of

It’s pathetic like mate. On Saturday, the club simply had to issue a holding communication. Something like “we are aware of an incident in the North Stand, and will be working with the police. A further communication will be issued next week”

For some reason though, there seems a reluctance by the club to address the issue. They have now lost any narrative as the local press are rightly running the petition story.

If they haven’t made a statement by 6pm tonight, then I don’t think they plan to make one mate. Instead they will hope that the story just gets dropped
What can they realistically say? Unless its 'we are putting a net up' then people are just going to kick off. I doubt they can move them ready for next season with no consultation and season tickets already getting sold, it's too late now.

They need to just put a net up.

They did put something over the tannoy and on screens, when it happened, but to be fair, it might as well have said " we saw the smoke bomb/flare incident, but we don't care"

Regardless of what the outcome is if anything, they need to acknowledge what happened and apologise to any fans impacted.

I've dropped an email to Building control at SCC as I don't believe they are actively taking fan safety seriously. As pointed out by the half arsed searching of away fans, or no searching at all as mentioned further up the thread.

You’re quite right that any immediate statement wont offer a solution but it would at least acknowledge the problem still exists.

I hope I’m wrong about this but it does feel like they are reluctant to put the spotlight back on the issue.

They have had more than enough time to sort this situation out now, they need to do something about it instead of just sitting there hoping the problem goes away.

To be honest there is no point in searching away fans. It just penalises the decent fans..and let's remember there are some. The sort of people who come with the intention of throwing things will just hide them and the stewards don't have the authority to do any sort of really thorough search.. I'd be fuming if I went to an event and had to empty my pockets. The whole approach or lack of, is an actual joke.
