Probably been done on here before but…

If you had to say which song is synonymous with NUFC then the vast majority would say Blaydon Races. All other clubs versions, including Sunderland’s, changed the lyrics
Which is what I have already said in the thread. Durham should have their own song if they’re going to have one not a mag one.

Fair enough, it’s a North East folk song.
My original point was incorrect, the original races were horse races around the Stella Haugh site which is in Durham. The song was about the chaotic bus trip from the Bigg Market to Blaydon.
The ‘new’ Blaydon races is a road race which retraces those bus journeys.

I've swiftly adapted this from the original song lyrics. If it was belted out full blast, it could be very good (IMO of course!).

One Sunday morning Mowbray went
A-fishing' in the Wear;
And caught a Shearer on his hook,
He thought it very queer
But what kind of fish Shearer was
Mowbray could not tell.
It wasn't worth taking home
So he hoyed it doon a well.

Whisht! Lads, haad yor gobs,
Aa'll tell ye's aall an aaful story
Whisht! Lads, haad yor gobs,
Aa'll tell ye 'boot the worm.

(Then finish with "Sunderland, Sunderland " and repeat)
Been singing this whilst doing my morning ablutions

sorry

Which origins? It’s about a race, of which at least 80% of which is run north of the Tyne, dropping into Durham for the finish.

It’s ALWAYS been synonymous with NUFC. No idea why Durham CC chose it but they’ve been singing it since they’ve been 1st class.

Hijacked 😂😂😂

NUFC sing the original lyrics. The likes of Man Utd sing about Matt Busby’s aces, which shows how long it’s been sung at football
Because although the county is Durham they played at Gateshead Fell back then?

Just asked 4 mates who grew up in the NW, support Liverpool and Everton, now live in Manchester, Essex, London and Dubai. 3 had no idea the song existed and the other knows it because he's mates with a lass from South Shields who plays folk music with her dad's band. So on the back of that in depth polling ;) your concern that everyone associates it with the mags is unfounded

The Blaydon Races was written in c1862 before any of DCCC, SAFC or NUFC were formed, by George Ridley of Gateshead (Co Durham).

As it’s a folk song about a place in Co Durham, written by a native of Co Durham, if anyone has any ‘claim’ to it, it’s the teams from Co Durham. And these don’t include the black and white b@stards (of Northumberland).

Only partially true, the song is about the journey from Newcastle to Blaydon, down the length of the Scotswood Road and across the Chain Bridge into Co Durham. 4 of the 5 verses are set in Northumberland 😀

I’m looking forward to discussing this when weve won our 5th game of the season

Aye, if we have the type of season we all would like, mebbes we’d better get the mods to sticky this thread 😂

Mebbes, but the finale and the best bit is set in Co Durham 😂

wonder which player originally introduced it, dont remember it being a thing for long, wonder if it was when Rocky Bunny and Harmy were playing, but then so will Colly and Rushy have been playing too??

I think someone earlier in the thread said it’s been around since minor counties days.

Colly introduced it. He said the county should have a team song especially after his expeirence playing cricket at different levels in Australia. I don't kniw who sctualky selected the Blaydon Races.

I’ve got a proposal that should solve the problem here. Nobody could argue with them singing the old Roger Whittaker number “Old Durham Town”. That should go down a storm in the dressing room.

Just been looking into the worm song. Sounds more interesting than some rubbish about walking on the hills without a hat
Let's get the Worm sorted. It's a Wearside song and perfect for a Wearside club. To hell with the Blaydon Races... whatever its origins.
I remember singing Blaydon Races on the Fulwell but The Lambton Worm would be much more "us".

I love the song but wonder just how many know it now. I know it best by Owen Brannigan but see Brian Ferry had a go at it blended with the Dear Prudence guitar riff
