The Safety of Fans in the North Stand

There’s absolutely no chance my dad moves his seat. We’ve sat there since the SOL opened and it’s our seats. The people around us have all sat there since 1997 too, and we like the people around and what not. My dads also stood in his words “the exact same spot” at Fulwell for 20 odd years before that. He’d rather not go than move his seat, and I know all of those around me would be in a similar position. People are rightfully very possessive about their seats and I don’t see why we should move due to club incompetence when there’s plenty of options available to the useless knackers

There's other factors as well. I've had my seat for many years and it fits my disability needs. I've had a look on the stadium map and the only seats I can find which would seat my group and meet my needs are at right at the front, which I don't like sitting in for personal reasons (too low, get wet when it rains and people keep walking past all match).

If someone in the North Lower was seriously injured, or in the case of the glass bottle incident actually lost their life....Would the club open themselves up to corporate manslaughter for not doing enough to stop the risk?

Yep and it would not just be the club as a corporate body but also any senior employees or Board members deemed to have made decisions which created the risk

They need to think on here

I honestly can’t believe Steve Neil is prepared to continue in his job knowing what liability he is leaving himself personally open to. Anything unfortunate happens, which feels inevitable lets be honest, and he will personally be prosecuted alongside Davison.

Its disgusting how the club is treating our fans, utter contempt in ignoring the issue we have with away supporters.

I dont understand how the sheepfolds developments affect the away supportors unable to go that end of the stadium? The council should elaborate on that as they are all self contained contruction sites that wouldnt encroach in any way on the stadium

Pursuing criminal charges would help. And publicising these. I know for a fact the CPS are just accepting public match banning order pleas from solicitors as a means of reducing their caseload. Which doesn’t come with a criminal record, a conviction or anything and let’s be honest there are ways around banning orders if you are that way inclined. If we went in hard on the offenders and pushed the harshest criminal charges possible, then publicised it to other away fans visiting then it would act as a disincentive.

However, I’m sure you’ll agree it’s fair to say the club won’t do any of that due to incompetence. So physically preventing the throwing of objects due to a screen or net is the safest option

Unfortunately, little account will be taken of your seating preference when health and safety issues arise. The same will be true when a resumption of standing is allowed as there will be wholesale cancellations of fan's seat replacing the seating that was previously offered. To be fair the same was true at Roker Park when the Roker End was deemed to be unfit and the number of fans able to stand there was drastically reduced.

The fact that fan's groups and social media are having conversations about missiles being thrown makes the club more aware and, thus, more culpable for any ensuing calamities which, if reasonable mitigation of those issues is not adequately addressed, will inevitable happen at some point.

I wonder whether KLD would contemplate sitting in the lower North Stand occasionally (especially when we have one of the big teams come to us) as a test of his and the Club's support for current measures in place to ensure the safety of the fans?

It's an absolute joke of an excuse as they are assuming all away fans approach and leave the area directly behind the North Stand.

Although commenting on my own post, It may be because theres going to be a lot of housing up that end in the future

If I was in his shoes I would be having some pretty direct and immediate conversations with Mr Davison

Tbf mate, there’s still plenty they can do which doesn’t require a Perspex screen. For example, they could do what they do in Italy and have your name printed on the ticket. To gain access to the ground your ID needs to match your ticket.

Once in the ground, you then force fans to sit in their actual seat. If an object is thrown, the club just have to pinpoint the section it’s come from and they have the list of names of everyone in that section.

The club also have to be much nastier when it comes to dealing with away fans/clubs. If an object is thrown, the allocation for next season is slashed. Statements also need to be issued immediately after the game if something is thrown

Finally, we heavily highlight in the press when one of wankers is caught.
I appreciate the sentiment, but is it really enforceable.
Names on the tickets are, but to force someone to carry photo identifiable id, will be a massive no no. Look at the bother, they are having re voting with id. In the sake of fairness will this have to be implemented with the home supporters as well. That would create a massive headache, even for just away fans.

Look at the issues caused in the south stand when supporters all crowded together to be with their mates. to force people to sit in their seats allocated, is non enforceable. what happens when a group go to the toilet or at half time or a goal is scored.

Re cctv, this has to be central to the solution. Problem is the amount of cameras. To get accuracy and definition the camera needs to be pretty close up. once close up the camera looses the wideness of the coverage, so a large area is left uncovered. as it is not known from what seat the object is thrown, it is always a reactive action. vipes coins etc dont leave a trail. smoke bombs do, but again reactive but then the smoke may hide the thrower.

just from memory, we are talking about smoke being thrown by (apologies for wrong or missed out names) coventry, Burnley, hull and birmingham.

It appears to me, the throwers hide in the crowd and depend on that to avoid detection (may be a rather simplistic, but I am not aware of the full statistics).

The away crowd , is linked in with the safety committee and no doubt, if we reduce the away crowd, will the away team then limit our away allocation (remember a number of our supporters are not angels)

Talk is about nets and perspex screens. How will this react with health and safety rules. What if a fire was to break our some other dangerous situation, would the fans blocked in the perspex or nets be able to escape. I understand Other countries do have these in place, but those countries are not covered by either GB or english regulations

You are right re the wanker who is caught.

My line of thought which may work is to send in undercover police with covert cameras to sit in with the away crowd. It may work it may not. However if it did work, that publicised would be amazing.

Partly because there are going to be venues for eating and drinking before and after the match, so potential for home fans to increase in that area.

Partly because there will be no space to park away coaches after the development, so it means walking away fans around to another area of the stadium to get back on their coaches.

The club have got it wrong. The away supporters need to moved back to where they came from. The inconvenience to some is a small price to pay for the safety of our supporters. A net Will not stop all missiles.
