Hoping to be down for the first two days of the home opener, full of cold at the minute like so there might be warmer ways to spend the back end of the week.
Took me a couple of days to get over the disappointment of Saturdays capitulation, watched the Sunday ‘fightback’ never really expecting us to get over the line but after two days of being in the driving seat it was a bitter pill to swallow seeing the lads surrender the initiative so meekly.
I hope the batsmen bought the fish and chips for all the bowlers at the Whaler on the way back, because if they’d have done their jobs properly in either innings* we’d have been talking about a 22 point win now. The second innings performance was abysmal, against a bowling attack that showed themselves as being very ordinary throughout game, but the tide began to turn on day one of course, the loss of 9 wickets for 163 after starting 213-1 can’t be overlooked, it was significantly worse than the second innings 189.
I have no issue with trying to be positive, I support the idea of trying to go hard to win games instead of drawing them - but we’ve also got to understand the situation of the game at the time and when we were 213-1 we were essentially only one more good (batting) session away from removing any chance of a Sussex win from the game. Some of the wickets we lost in this game were nothing short of suicidal, when even wreckless would’ve been unacceptable.
Hopefully it’s a valuable lesson, I like the phrase ‘you either win or you learn’ and that’s what the lads need to do I reckon, quickly. It isn’t all doom and gloom, I saw enough from the lads over four days to know that we’ll be alright, I think the performances of McKinney in the first innings and Robinson throughout were a positive. It’s one game, still a small sample, but I do get the impression that we’ll be closer to promotion than we will the wooden spoon. Meaningful cricket in August and September will do me, we’ll be alright.
Don’t expect any changes for Worcestershire, perhaps Borthwick could be pushing for fitness, I really don’t get the hate of him on here, I’m not giving up on him yet. Might be a rotation of the bowlers too, we’ll see later in the week.
*one or two players aside.
