CC :: Durham v Worcestershire

brandon

Striker
Hoping to be down for the first two days of the home opener, full of cold at the minute like so there might be warmer ways to spend the back end of the week.

Took me a couple of days to get over the disappointment of Saturdays capitulation, watched the Sunday ‘fightback’ never really expecting us to get over the line but after two days of being in the driving seat it was a bitter pill to swallow seeing the lads surrender the initiative so meekly.

I hope the batsmen bought the fish and chips for all the bowlers at the Whaler on the way back, because if they’d have done their jobs properly in either innings* we’d have been talking about a 22 point win now. The second innings performance was abysmal, against a bowling attack that showed themselves as being very ordinary throughout game, but the tide began to turn on day one of course, the loss of 9 wickets for 163 after starting 213-1 can’t be overlooked, it was significantly worse than the second innings 189.

I have no issue with trying to be positive, I support the idea of trying to go hard to win games instead of drawing them - but we’ve also got to understand the situation of the game at the time and when we were 213-1 we were essentially only one more good (batting) session away from removing any chance of a Sussex win from the game. Some of the wickets we lost in this game were nothing short of suicidal, when even wreckless would’ve been unacceptable.

Hopefully it’s a valuable lesson, I like the phrase ‘you either win or you learn’ and that’s what the lads need to do I reckon, quickly. It isn’t all doom and gloom, I saw enough from the lads over four days to know that we’ll be alright, I think the performances of McKinney in the first innings and Robinson throughout were a positive. It’s one game, still a small sample, but I do get the impression that we’ll be closer to promotion than we will the wooden spoon. Meaningful cricket in August and September will do me, we’ll be alright.

Don’t expect any changes for Worcestershire, perhaps Borthwick could be pushing for fitness, I really don’t get the hate of him on here, I’m not giving up on him yet. Might be a rotation of the bowlers too, we’ll see later in the week.

*one or two players aside.

I don't think there's any real hate of Borthwick, at least not on my part. Disappointment and a bit of frustraation because I know he's a very good batsman who is not getting the scores he was before his long trip to Kennington.

If Borthwick is fit then he'll come in for Clark, with McKinney going down to 6. From what I was told originally it was a bad injury on the finger so I was very surprised to see him named in last weeks squad.

It's pretty much a given that there's going to be time lost in this match due to the iffy forecast so will be interesting to see Campbell's approach given his well documented dislike of draws.

Let's hope Bedders can find that elusive big score in this game (1 half century in his last 12 Championship innings).

A reminder to those going on Thursday that there's a 'Meet The Players Forum' after close of play.

Cracking post mate.

Having watched Worcestershire on Saturday this won’t be an easy game. Tbh I had expected Derbyshire to win when I booked my tickets but it was comfortable for the away side in the end. D’Oliveira and Libby looked in good touch with the bat and Joe Leach was dangerous with the ball.

Hopeful of a win though, especially given we’re at home. Hopefully the weather holds off.

Hate is a strong word, I probably should’ve picked a better turn of phrase, but I do get the impression that some posters have given up on him and I feel like some of the criticism of him is harsh.

As I said, I’m willing to show him a bit more patience yet.

I seen a bit of criticism with his pre season form which I don't worry about at all see how he goes in the important stuff, I don't know what it is with him we all know he has it in him to get decent runs.

The positives to take from the Sussex game were Carse's form with both bat and ball in the 2nd innings and Robinson's batting and'keeping throughout The downsides were the contributions of our leading bat Bedingham and leading bowler Potts. Given that neither made positive contributions we can probably take encouragement that we took the game to the wire. Going into a game with only 3 front line seamers proved a risk when one of them has an off game as Potts did. I'd therefore bring Coughlin back for the Worcester match -he contributed well pre-season. I also think it's asking too much for a youngster to bat in the top order on debut. McKinney did fine in the 1st innings but he wasn't facing a new ball; he looked lost 2nd innings.
I'm confident he'll do well down the order so I'd go
Lees
Jones
Clark
Bedingham
Robinson
McKinney
Coughlin
Carse
Raine
Potts
Kundemann.
2nds play Essex at Billericay starting next Monday.Maybe give Borthwick and Bushnell a run out and the little seen DeLeede.
Onwards and upwards. HTL

I’d rather McKinney at 3 than Clark, I just don’t rate him (red ball wise) at all and I’d rather push a young lad forward for better developmental opportunity. That being said, if Borthwick is fit enough to play he is 3 for the first team, McKinney drops to 6, Clark goes to Billericay.

Totally agree. Clark was just the stopgap in Badgers absence.

I really don’t get the hate of him on here,

There is no hate, he has simply not shown any sort of form since returning and his captaincy is not good enough to offset that. Any criticism is warranted, you just take it badly because he's a MLF.
I think a draw is highly likely if the forecast is accurate.
Saturday and Sunday are both looking dry, maybe a few hours lost Thursday and Friday.
Nah, you only need 2 complete days play at the Riverside to get a result when conditions are damp and overcast.
Depends how the wickets perform. They were seriously sedate last season.
