The Safety of Fans in the North Stand

The solution is simple but won’t be popular.

1. Loads of high quality CCTV cameras to identify the offender
2. Custodial sentence and lifetime stadium ban across the whole of the UK for the offender
3. Five game away fan ban for the club of the offender
4. Offending club must pay the five clubs the full value that club would have brought in, if the full away allocation was sold

Baffles me why we take a soft line on this. Nobody seems to give a fuck and it won’t be until someone is seriously hurt.

I took a bite out of a pie & lobbed the rest at a Coventry fan in the roker end at the old roker Park. A grown bloke was the intended target & It hit him & I didn't have any regrets.

Coins etc is a different matter.

It was nice tbf. It was a gelders. This 1 Coventry fan was goading us all 1st half so I just lost it.

Used to do a cracking pie & bovril at roker Park. Great memories 😃
Seem to remember they were Carricks Pies.
Might be wrong.
They were very good though with a scadden hot polystyrene cup of Bovril.

I remember about 15 years ago, I was sitting in the south stand literally right next to the away fans. A few of their fans were goading us the entire game and really winding us up. One of our lads decided to take it into his own hands and chucked a coin and hit the main lad in the chest.

Call me a grass or whatever, but quite a few of our lot and their lot said it wasn't on and grassed him to the stewards for being an absolute tosser (shit one at that cos it hit with the velocity of a dead duck). At the end of the game, I said to their lads well done on the win and good luck for the rest of the season and shook hands with about 10 of their lot, even though we had been winding each other up all game.

If that coin had come from 100 feet in the air and hit someone, it would've been a completely different story. Not only could it seriously injure someone, it would never be against a target that they are aiming for. It could hit me, it could hit my 9 year old son or it could hit someone's 75 year old grandma or grandad, which makes it even worse. It's going to put a huge amount of people off getting season tickets anywhere from about row 23 towards the goal in front of the away fans because they could be fearful all game about getting something whacked off the top of their heads at any time during a whole f***ing season.

The club are genuinely shooting themselves in the foot with this and something substantial needs to be done.

Yeah. Its gone too far. Me and son are moving season tickets away from the north stand next season for that reason. Also because of the morons near us in Row 28 like.

of course it will not stop the problem, throwing things at matches has gone on for decades, i was once hit with a bag of peanuts at Roker park, it was like a javelin.
You make light of it but it's definitely different now. I well remember the peanuts being thrown to those who shouted for a bag to be passed backwards or be thrown by the mischievous imps for a bit of a laugh. But flares and 50 pence pieces bouncing off your head is a very different matter and rather more dangerous is it not?

Attack them, give them a good hiding, jobs a good-in!

It seems to me that the only decisive action our club took was to stop us having a display by stopping our fans from throwing paper aeroplanes.

At the last supporter's meeting they turned the conversation about the away fans chucking stuff and being moved into a conversation about the behaviour of home fans chucking stuff.....

"The club has been placed on FA Report 6 times this season (SD). 3 of these reports have been for missiles thrown at the pitch at the Stadium of Light by home fans, 2 reports related to behaviour by SAFC fans away from home and 1 report related to missiles thrown by Burnley fans at the Stadium of Light. The total number of missiles thrown by home supporters on the above 3 reports is over 15. The most missiles thrown at any one match is 9, thrown at the Fulham FA Cup replay match. Objects include vapes, coins, plastic bottles, plastic cups, a toy rubber dog, and a bingo dabber. Objects are mainly thrown from North Stand Lower and South Stand. There are ongoing investigations into offenders from 4 incidents captured on CCTV.

These reports only represent the number of incidents reported by match officials - the actual number of missiles thrown by Sunderland fans at the Stadium of Light is significantly higher. Most recently at the Sunderland v Bristol City match, there were 4 incidents of missile throwing at the pitch by Sunderland fans which were not noted by the match officials, these missiles were thrown from the South Stand and North Stand Lower and included a glass bottle. The club has been warned by the league about the behaviour of our supporters. Sunderland is not the only club facing such problems. SD raised the issue because it needs to be addressed or the club will face fines and / or restrictions on allocations at home and away games"
Great find out fans and ban them. Doesn't change the need to do something about the away supporters.
