Durham v Durham University pre season

Well that was an epic fail of a prediction which is a tad concerning given the conditions were most definitely bowler friendly and in East Durham most definitely still are bowling conditions. I just hope the wickets aren't flat, time will tell I guess.

Also the fact that they have now signed two overseas specialist spinners suggest that they don't think the right arm meduim pacers will consistently take 20 wickets to win matches.

I do not think that for a moment. We have not had a quality spinner since Blackwell left. Our signings are Australian International spinners and will enhance our bowling attack and give us more variation. Good signings.

So can you remember in the last 30 years when Durham have used up an official overseas slot to sign a specialist slow bowler for the start of the season.
Blackwell completely different example as he was a domestic all rounder who had been released by his former county.
I agree its what we need as a signing as the way the wickets appear to be playing at the Riverside over the past couple of years the traditional seam attack don't look like taking 20 wickets.

Strictly speaking it’s only one signing (at a time) really. As others have said though, both lads have played for Australia, it isn’t like they’re a pair of rejects/journeymen from the county circuit.

On the wider point of taking 20 wickets, it’s good to have variety, all succesful teams have it and there were many games last year where the lack of a competent spinner was our downfall.

I’m fairly confident in saying that in the 30 or so years of our life as a First Class County, we’ve probably entered no less than 25 of them craving a top quality spinner.

Bushnell quite possibly being in the top 6 as a batsman and part of a four man attack opens up a spot too. Especially with a wicket keeper probably batting 5 or so

I don't disagree and what you have said is exactly what i think. Its a brave and good move. All i have done is make the point that in the Past because of the nature of the wickets Durham would never had considered using one of their overseas allocation for a specialist spinner.
For years i have probably been the biggest moaner on here about the wickets at Durham and as a spectator how it would be great to see quality slow bowling more influential in the game.

Yes, I agree on that, but certainly in recent seasons wickets at Durham have been very different to what we’ve expected them to be like and so the need for a quality spinner has increased. It seems that trend has been true of most away venues too.

Yeah i think thats why they have gone down this route. If they are going to get promoted they need to take 20 wickets to win matches. I don't think high scoring draws will get you promoted and the seamers paradise at the Riverside has not been the case for 2 or 3 seasons.
