Durham v Durham University pre season

Considering this game is pencilled in for 3 days it seems like Durham don’t want to hang about. I suppose if we get it done early tomorrow, it allows this squad to travel to Headingley. I have a feeling Yorkshire will bat tomorrow and we’ll bat on Wednesday in that fixture which would give our batsmen from this game the chance of a hit down there against much better bowling than they’ll have faced today.

Having looked at the weather forecast, it's possible there won't be another ball bowled in the match.

Classic Durham day of cricket yesterday for the start of 2023.
On the field an 18 year old local lad makes his debut and scores an undefeated 100.
Off the field the electronic scoreboard packed in within an hour. We had a player on the scorecard in our Xl who was actually playing for another county and the online feed started mid afternoon and conked out after tea.

I doubt it personally, the squads were selected presumably to give everyone a chance, it's unfortunate the way the weather looks to be turning out but the likes of Lees, Jones, Robinson and whoever else will want a knock just add much as whoever did or didn't bat here.

Was surprised we declared so early instead of letting more people have a bat/retire out but it's about getting in that mindset of winning as a team more than individual successes

It was that point I had in mind when I suggested what I did, because only 4 lads had an opportunity to bat - which I found odd and it’s unlikely with the state of the game as it is, ignoring the weather, that they’ll get an opportunity in the second innings.

Listening to the Campbell interview though, it’s clear his intention is to be ruthless at winning games of cricket. 6 wins from 6 in Zimbabwe and a likely victory here will set a good tone heading into the season.

Chances of McKinney opening with Lees and Jones 3?
I think it's probable he'll get a chance this season but the coaches, assuming we have more than one, will be careful not to throw him in too soon. And that's especially since this season the Dukes ball is supposed to have been fixed and that means will move around more than last season.
Also, looking back at Dan Lawrence when he played for young England (pretty sure from memory) that he played as an opener, but for Essex he's playing down the order. So just because McKinney is opening now doesn't necessarily mean that the position he will settle into.
2nd also, for his first games, if he does intend to be an opener it may be best to start him at no 3 just to take the pressure off him at the start.

Aye, and badger said as much. Winning breeds winning and they want that to be the habit this year more importantly than owt else

How was th takeaway?

He's been selected at captain of the seconds so i think that suggests no immediate plans to use him regularly otherwis that would be a pointless appointment

Weather looks a bit less unpromising at CLS tomorrow, at least in the morning. Might yet get a result.
