Striker situation

Can't believe how negative people are? 7 points from 9 this week. Some lovely football being played and some great goals scored. The criticism of Joffy is embarrassing to be honest. He will come good you can see it coming. Interesting to hear Mowbray saying they haven't really had time to integrate him due to so many games at the minute. All because we conceded a late penalty yesterday. We all know we needed another striker to go with Joffy and yes it is shit that we didn't get one. However if they didn't think there was a suitable option right now I support that. Rather that then end up with shite. Enjoy this season it's been brilliant and a real surprise.

“He’s poor” He missed a chance. No good striker ever did that did they. Half the league wanted Gelhardt, aye Shite. Terrible. Typical Sunderland reaction to a striker that doesn’t score 5 in his first 4

Teams wanted him but I'm guessing they wanted him so they could play him in his correct position, issue is we have Pritchard and Diallo to play that position and Roberts can sometimes come across and do it as well. We also have Roberts, Diallo, Lihadji, Benette and Clarke who play in his other best position already here. What we actually needed was a striker but he isn't one.

We are screwed now though and back to hoping like we did earlier this season when Stewart and Simms both got injured that someone can 'do a job' there. We have to play players completely out of position hoping they might do something rather than knowing they can.

It is a shame and a big mistake by the recruitment team, even Mowbray has stated as much without actually saying it but we can do bugger all about it. It could definitely cost us, we were far less effective as an attacking team without Stewart and Simms earlier this season and we are now back to the same position hoping those same players plus another attacking midfielder/winger can score enough without a striker. It could definitely cost us especially against the better teams in this league. Rotherham, QPR and Reading are shite so we should beat them anyway. Norwich, Burnley, Watford, Luton, Sheff UTD, Coventry, Hull etc are less so and we'll see how much we miss Stewart and nothing at all to replace him soon enough.

Those asking what should/can we do. Unfortunately there is bugger all we can do, we've left ourselves short and are hoping that Gelhardt or somebody will do a job out of position. We aren't Man City though and whilst some of the football we play is outstanding and much better than a lot were hoping for before the season started we will struggle without someone up top who knows what they are doing and wherever we finish it is highly likely we will all know we could've done better had we brought someone in.

We've had this problem up front for a long long time so it's not like it was sprung upon them without warning
Just remember how “shit” Stewart was for a very long time !!

At least he was a shit striker, we haven't got a striker to call shit now ;)

Excellent post!
But for some Speakman can do nothing wrong.

Yet we've scored 10 goals and lost one game, which was a cup replay against a Premier league side that are having a very good season.

We started well earlier in the season without a striker but we soon tailed off once teams realised what was happening. We've got some very very tough games coming up in March and April and we'll see where we are more so then. Hopefully Gelhardt will come good out of position, it's doubtful but you never know

Don't think there is anything wrong with that, they can see the progress we are and have been making and in reality it's phenomenal. They'll defend the club and they have every right to do so because we are doing brilliantly well. Doesn't change the fact we screwed up not getting a striker when we knew we needed one about 2 years ago, have needed one ever since and even more so this last winter window but it's not hard to see why they'll defend the club and what they can see they are trying to do.

As you and @Billericay Dichio seem to want to prove that people, myself included are going on Ad nauseam about the striker situation despite me offering formations, reasons why etc without reverting to the obvious I will take my leave from this conversation and in future win, lose or draw offer opinions on every other position on the pitch apart from forwards

I thought your responses to me were reasonable observations about the current squad and I tried to respond in kind. Don't know why your so huffy. Hey ho.

Wasn't huffy and still not huffy, but as I said, it's becoming impossible to discuss the forward situation in relation to the game or the next game without post after post of "we know" "who would you bring in" "it's boring" etc

Clarke Harris has scored more this season than Geldhart has scored in his career.
So our billlionaire spending 5 million on one player is going to bankrupt us . Give you head a shake.
He is not worth 5 milliion but if he scores the goals to get us up.who cares. If he doesnt then we take a hit we can afford
The 5 million outlay for a striker..Sunderland would get roughly that back in playoff revenue, thought at the time it will probably cost them if they don’t bring one in after the injury to Stewart, could still make it but it’s now a lot more difficult now.
Tha back end of the championship when games come thick and fast, is when squad depth really come into play, fatigue, injury’s and suspensions.

They would only get £5M back if we won the play-offs, and rhats far from guaranteed.
Also, we’d have to give him at least a 2 year contract, which I dont think we could justify. Not good enough for the PL, and didn’t set the world alight in the championship either.

I think on this occasion, to roll the dice would have been the right thing to do? If you make the play off final after the 2 legs with TV money and everything else it’s big chunk of money, the 170 million is obviously the gold carrot.

The lack of a c.forward is the reason I think we will miss out on the playoffs despite having the most creative team in the league behind the number 9 position. It’s a real shame and a big failing on the part of recruitment, which tbf has generally been very good. It’s almost arrogance whoever thought it was a good idea not to have a replacement for Stewart in the door.

I don’t know how much making the final would bring in, but Im guessing it would be nowhere near that much.
I do think we should have got a striker in mind, but I wouldn’t have paid £5M for this one.

You certainly weren’t around midweek that’s for sure.

What's to debate? We are short because we didn't get another body in and Stewart got injured. 100% of the fans know this. The only difference is that some fans are ouraged by this and some aren't so much but even thats been discussed to death. There is no new angle that anyone can give that hasn't been said already. Whats the lpint if we win our next two again and then have a draw of moaning on about the striker situation when theres nothing new to add?
I was around and hae been consistent. One swallow make a summer now does it?
