New Music Releases Thread

My favourites:

Deathcrash - Return
Charles Watson - Yes
The Simps - Siblings
Young Jesus - Shepherd Herd
Sweet Pill - Where The Heart Is
Big Thief - Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You
Foals - Life Is Yours

I admittedly need to go back and listen to a few more as I’ve not been utterly blown away by any record this year.
I did forget FJM and Arctic Monkeys. Thought their releases were great.

Top 5
BCNR - Ants From Up There
(a masterpiece, just perfectly crafted songs without any filler, their peak and my AOTY by a distance)
Martha - Please Don't Take Me Back (Durham's finest return for arguably their best to date - pop punk)
caroline - caroline (eight white private school kids faff about on guitars and strings for an hour, it's great and so self-indulgent)
deathcrash - Return (it has been labelled slowcore and that just about sums it up, they're bloody brilliant)
Kevin Morby - This is a Photograph (reckon this might be his best to date - folk rock)

Best of the rest
Oliver Sim - Hideous Bastard
(bloke from the XX going solo, if you liked them then give this a go)
Jockstrap - I Love You Jennifer B (straight up guitar pop interspersed with general weirdery, almost made it into my top five)
Kiwi Jr - Chopper (indie pop, they have an incredible knack of writing unbelievably catchy hooks, just consistently excellent)
Horsegirl - Versions of Modern Performance (a standout from the year, a bit shoegazey, a bit grungy, one to keep an eye on)
Let's Eat Grandma - Two Ribbons (I've always ignored these as their name is extremely shit and off-putting but I was an idiot for doing so as this is just straight up pop bangers)
Astrel K - Flickering i (Rhys from Ulrica Spacek goes solo with a slightly 60s inspired album, it's really well crafted)
Alex Cameron - Oxy Music (It's an Alex Cameron album, it's funny, it's catchy and very fun)
Hypernatural - Hypernatural (record from one half of Cut Copy, it's dreamy, ambient at times, but super catchy, really good record that went under the radar of most)
Orlando Weeks - Hop Up (bloke from the Maccabees solo project, it's just really well written pop songs, I thought it was a lovely listen)
Decius - Decius Vol. I (Lias from Fat White Family groaning and moaning over acid house, when it's good it's very good)
Daniel Avery - Ultra Truth (Avery returns with something of a minimalist techno record)
Gold Panda - The Work (similar to the above actually, it's probably his most complete record to date)
Arctic Monkeys - The Car (sort of picks up where TBH&C left off but doesn't hit those heights nor match the swagger that record had, it's still very good though and worth a listen if you had previously given up on AM, think Richard Hawley and you're not far off where they're at)
Sorry - Anywhere But Here (catchy guitar pop from a London duo)
Crack Cloud - Tough Baby (bit of a letdown to be honest after the last one but it's still been played a lot - slightly eccentric, spikey vocals, now with added strings)
Panda Bear - Reset (just a great collection of damn catchy songs, for fans of Animal Collective)

I don’t get the love for BCNR. Tried at the time of release as the thread was gushing all over them… come back to the album a couple of times over the year and still don’t get it. Looks like it’s gonna be a popular pick though so it is ‘just me’.

It does nowt for me either.

Same here.

There was another band that everyone was gushing about around the start of the year that I couldn’t get the hype around. Their name escapes me now but they haven’t appeared in anyone’s lists yet - couldn’t get past the fact it sounded like Woody from This is England was doing the vocals.

I mainly listen to punk and alt-country/Americana though so there’s a lot that’s popular in this thread that isn’t my cup of tea.

I should really do my list scientifically and use my albums of the week as a short list. I'll dig back through the thread. Want to gives listens to both Weyes Blood and RIchard Dawson anyway.

Just out of Richard dawsons screening at star and shadow, its interesting like I’d probably need to sit on it for a while and give the full album a listen didnt immediately strike me as his best work but very funny in his Q&A
he was on last weeks Adam Buxton podcast which is usually pretty good
He’s on the Adam Buxton podcast this week, comes across really well (as I thought he might do, tbh). There’s a nice little bit where he talks about working with a lad from Sunderland and picking up his accent.
doh!

Probably Suede, closely followed by Fontaines DC for album of the year for me. But there's no way I could compile a list, it's been a pretty poor year imo.

Noticed 'Thriller 40' is out. Not only celebrating four decades since its original release but to my delight has thirty-four tracks on it. Including demo tracks and an acoustic demo version of Beat It, which is short but stunning. Jackson's voice sounds so crisp and clear on that it almost brought a tear to my eye. The Immortal Remixes added to this album, too are very well made as well. A lot can be and have been said about him but his songs really do seem to stand the test of time.

Right then, not the list but these week's listening. Some good stuff here.

Royksopp: the best of their triumvirate of related releases this year. Reminds me a little of Justice. Good.
Anna Mieke: indie singer-songwriter, fragile, folkish, very good, sounds a special talent.
Helen Ganya: previously known as Dog In Snow. Good voice, a little post-punk, a little dram pop.
Weyes Blood: elegant, restrained, very, very good.
Pole: dubbish bleeps. Interesting, not warm enough.
Caitlin Rose: the return of a real talent. Americana singer-songwriter's first in several years, very good.
Richard Dawson: were it a 40 minute album, minus opening 41 minute track "The Hermit", it would be brilliant. As it is, flawed genius.
Acid Klaus: interesting, a bit dancy, a bit motorik, a but amusing. Pretty good.
Morton Valence: UK based male/female Americana. Very, very good.
Poor Performer: aka Simon Rivers of The Bitter Springs solo. Like a slightly more downbeat Bitter Springs album. I'm a Bitter Springs fan so biased.
One Eleven Heavy: a sort of transatlantic jam band. A bit bluesy, a bit psychedelic, at its best excellent.
The Prescriptions: smart American indie rock. Highly promising.
Bibio: I'd kind of drifted away from Bibio but read good reviews of this. It's okay, hasn't grabbed me.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse: the 15 minute track "Chevrolet" is terrific. A lot of the rest involves Young putting down his guitar and pumping his organ. It's pretty good but not his finest work.
Franz Nicolay: the solo career of The Hold Steady's keyboard man goes on. This is warm and engaging without being life changing.

Album of the Week: Anna Mieke just overcomes my bias toward Poor Performer. Weyes Blood, Caitlin Rose and Morton Valence all up there as well. Drop the opening 41 minutes and RIchard Dawson would be also.

Unthank : Smith released their first single today (Rachel Unthank and Paul Smith). Album out in Feb. Sounds more like Unthanks than Maximo Park.
