Fish & Chips Price Watch

My issue with most fish and chips is I don't want a small bit of fish hiding in a massive batter envelope and some previously frozen chips.

Give it a bit of love.

Pan fried cod or haddock, skin on, with a nice garlic butter and some big triple cooked chips.

Home made tartare sauce and Sarsons vinegar - now we are talking.

I'm off to Latimers tomorrow morning 🐟
Which chip shop does frozen chips? 😳
Our local chippy “Oh My Cod” has queues out the door, always freshly fried due to turnover and better value than pizzas/curries.
Curry prices are creeping right up, even Sunday night specials are knocking on £13 these days. Haven’t had one for a while and had one on Sunday, expensive game these days.

The Chinese seems to be the best value for a family meal these days.

Sounds very nice but its not fish and chips.

Good fish and chips knocks the socks off anything from a pizza/kebab shop. I presume it’s much healthier too as it isn’t full of processed stuff.
It’s about 7-9 quid round here for a 10” pizza now so F&C still good value in comparison imo

For context I bought a nice bit of cod from a fish monger last year and it was £7 just for the fish, raw no batter etc. Had to do my own batter and deep fry it

And the shop has to pay 20% vat, and all the other costs.
Its is actually cheaper to buy fish and chips than wet fish in most circumstances.
The council should close chip shops that sell bought in frozen chips. Abomination.

Went to that place next to the south stand last season for the first time in years last season. Selling bought in chips. 😡
i have only ever come across 2 shops that used frozen chips- one
was Mcdermotts in Croydon. He was so busy they literally didnt have the space or time to do their own chips. They now buy ready prepared chips which are the same as doing them yourself. it takes over £50 k a week.

Well it’s not the traditional idea of what fish and chips should look like.

Obviously the avarage chippie is not investing a lot of love in the production - it’s mass catering and cost, speed and profit are key considerations but I guarantee what I suggested is nicer option.

It won’t take off and it’s impractical but it’s lovely.

Minimum wage is a factor too. 20 year ago people could be getting paid 3-4 quid an hour now it’s 10+, NI and pension stuff. Obviously gas and elec through the roof + VAT.
That being said, when you see Mr Gill driving round in a new Bentley every year it makes you think.

I agreed yours sounds nice but you might as well be giving out a recipe for lasagne as it's basically not the same product. There are still good chippies and if I wanted 'fish and chips' and they're done well then they're going to be just as enjoyable as your pan-fried fish.

Hugh Fernley-DickWittington-Stall bloke did "Hugh's Fish Fight" ages ago and said we need to diversify into other fish if we still want Fish and Chips.
You hardly ever see Pollock, Coley and others in the chippy.

This👆

We live on an island and send a lot of our premium seafood abroad and buy farmed stuff from them.

I understand why this happens. It’s still mad though.

Also if people tried and bought other fish - mackerel, coley, pollock then supermarkets would stock it .

we push other species all the time and the shops just are not interested.
Frozen at sea hake is a fantastic fish and is half the price of cod.
if i went into a shop and hake and chips was £6 and cod and chips was £10 i would have the hake and i think most people would.

or go back to the days when you simply bought fish and chips and got what you were given.

That would make sense to me. If it's well cooked it'll be good. Probably gets drowned in salt and vinegar and whatever else too so it shouldn't matter the fish

Hake is fantastic and you rarely see it on menus here.

Even hake is expensive these days, used to practically give it away in the afternoon at Birmingham fish market.

You would think it would become more popular now.
it is but very slowly. as i say, if your option was £6 for hake or £10 for cod i am sure the majority would take the hake. i also think they would reorder it as it is that good. all you punters need to start asking your chip shop for cheaper alternatives.;

Crazy price difference that, I'd go for the hake too.
