Energy Prices - are they taking the piss???

Hope we have a mild winter, I've crunched the numbers and compared to last year the cost of using gas for my household will be up 367.7% (2.7714p/kWh -> 10.19p/kWh) plus £2.28 per month from standing charge this winter.

Cost of using electricity will be up 59.5% (20.208 p/kWh -> 32.239p/kWh) plus £7.14 per month.
Just leave the heating on it will be a maximum of £2500 for both.

Rather than the stilts fixing timber battens across the existing joists is an idea.
You could fix 50 x 50 battens across and fill between them with 50mm Celotex.
Along with the 100mm of fibreglass between the existing joists you'd have the equivalent of 200mm of fibreglass but only lose 50 mm of loft height. I know they recommend more than 200mm these days but it's a compromise. Between improving insulation and not losing too much loft height.
The boards in the link are easy to get through a loft hatch and easy to transport in a car if you're doing it yourself. Or get bigger sheets and cut them before taking them up into the loft.

You could take up the boards, use 4'x2' timber across the boarded area and add another 100mm underneath before replacing the boards. If you're not bothered about losing the 100mm in height.
Or just put 100mm of celotex under the boards instead of firbreglass. Pir boards like celotex and kingspan are expensive though.
I thought you lived in Vietnam?
Yeah, live Vietnam, but have a UK home in Thirsk that we like to get back to. First winter back this year, since before covid.

I realise it may have been confirmed over the previous pages but are there caps on the standing charges? Both of mine are approx. 49p/day but I'm seeing the gas one should be considerably lower.

Just had my new prices.....
Electric current price pkwh 26.86p, new price from 1st Oct 31.29p
Standing charge currently is 53.81p, new price is 54.96p (per day)

Gas current price pkwh 7.25p, new price from 1st Oct 10.53p
Standing charge currently is 37.28p, new price is 37.50p (per day)

The thieving f***ing *****.

Aye. By my calculations I’ll be adding an extra £500 a month in November and December. Now I’ve had smart radiator valves fitted since then, but my gas unit price alone will go from 2.6p to 15p. Fucks sake man.

The kids will be getting new jumpers for Christmas.

Now that is quite clever.
talking to him this morning his bill for the last 3 months were 90 quid combined :)

The standing charge is a disgrace and should have been sorted by this shithouse of a government

Yup I'm paying just over £200 a year before I've even switched a f***ing light on. Absolute disgrace, I'm on a prepayment meter, they don't do anything to it and they reckon these cost more to administer? Liars.

Full breakdown here:

Halfway down the page you can see the standing charge for each region as they vary. Bit scandalous really that people can pay almost 20p a day more depending on where they live.

Right I've just had an email through from Eon as my fixed deal ends in 2 days time, the email has a link to Eons new flexible rates. I'm absolutely shitting it here as I'm positive they're loads higher than what Martin Lewis has predicted they will be???

The new rates are as follows:

Electricity 50.09 p/kwh 19.61 per day standing charge.
Gas 14.63 p/kwh and 28.48 per day standing charge.

My electricity annual usage is 2100kwh and gas is 14800kwh

Working out the annual cost this comes to just shy of £3500 before the £400 government "grant" is taken off... Surely this can't be right?? I'm a single lad living in a 2 bed flat and am very conscious of turning things off if I am not using them..
To add to the above, on my last months statement my annual usage for gas was 12500 yet this month its 14800... I haven't even used the heating yet so can't see how this has f***ing rocketed up?? Is this Eon taking their chances before whacking my DD up to justify it or what?
