Strauss and his stupid ideas....

its been an interesting thread😄
I don’t agree with strauss’s ideas but do agree his track record shows he has done a lot of good for cricket and he deserves respect for that. He’s trying to solve a difficult problem with one hand tied behind his back in terms of options. Like it or not short term hundred is here to sgay contracts can be cancelled but this will have financial penalties attached I am sure and may do a lot more harm than good. I think we need an equivalent of the 100 longer term anyway prefrably 20 overs, allows non test cricketers to earn decent money and this should be allowed
as the woman’s game grows I wonder if the tournaments could be run at separate times, allowing 2 men’s games to be played and televised each day. a 5.30 start and a 8 start obviously earlier on weekends. This would condense tournament meaning more players stay the duration and free up additional peak time for red ball
i don’t have all the answers but just a thought. Hopefully longer term t20 franchise could be revisited ensuring all grounds get some games, will help with attendances and help to attract new fans
in terms of red ball could some pink ball 3 day games be possible ie longer days , same total overs as 4 day, using lights, might help with fixtures and get future test players used to it and attract a few more after work/school fans

Seems the ECB won't be happy till some of the fringe counties including Durham are playing no cricket at all.

Turning the one day cup into an FA Cup type knockout has merit but at the same time it reduces the number of games and therefore potential revenue. Maybe there is some way the existing one day cup with groups can be slimmed down with smaller groups of say 4 or 5 teams playing each other just once then striaght to semi fnals and this could then be supplemented with the straight knockout as well. Don't agree with dropping to 40 overs as 50 overs is the accepted standard at international level.

The 100 is a problem for me if the ECB want to stop the counties playing during it at the height of summer. That may be fine for the big test match ground counties but its completely unfair on the rest of us and they need to find a way to engage those counties not involved during August. Its very difficult as a Durham fan to engage with the 100 as it does not involve us or represent us in any way and it just feels completely contrived, which it is.

Sadly the ECB are and always have been finance driven. They should be the custodians of the game in this country and be thinking about promoting the game at all levels, yet they want senior teams to stop playing while they put on some wierd freak show to make money at the hieght of summer and are actually paying counties to not participate.

PS - Good win today.

You seriously think the 100 is getting cancelled in the next 2 years

Point out where on this thread I’ve said the 16.4 is getting cancelled anytime soon and I’ll gladly donate £50 to a charity of your choice.

You’ve accused me of doing that about 6 times now and despite me pointing out to you every single time that I absolutely have not - here you are again making the claim.

The measure of the success of the 16.4 will be how many other countries copy it. T20 took off very quickly and is now arguably the sports best seller. I don't see any other countries looking to set up a 16.4 tournament any time soon which tells me its not a realistic contender long term no matter how hard they push it.

The PCA stance is the players want to play less cricket.
I think they have a point in April May September but not much in the summer.
If players want to play less cricket they should also want less in the monthly pay packets. I mean. Did they become cricketers in the first place in order to not play cricket.

so what on earth are you talking about if you dont think its getting cancelled soon

what the hell is your point?

just abusing people who agree its not getting cancelled soon but are suggesting the best schedules we can manage at the minute?

utterly utterly bizarre.

This is not the point like, the fact its 16.4 balls overs or 20 overs makes absolutely no difference, I dunno why people focus on it

the problem is creating franchises and playing it in august

it would make absolutely no difference if it was a franchise t20 tournament in august, it would still be awful, still ruining the english game and still unpopular.

i dont really get your point, they are not wanting it copied around the world.

There really is no response to this level of stupidity.

You’re the only one on this thread who seems to have a problem grasping the point. It’s really f*cking simple aswell actually.

It’s taken you half a dozen attempts to finally accept that I haven’t actually said they’ll cancel the 16.4 and worse still, despite being told about ten times that contracts can actually be got out of you still seem completely awestruck by this news and are yet to admit it is humanly possible.

Getting back on topic why can't all of the counties play in every single round of matches? That way you would have 14 rounds instead of 16 freeing up a couple of weeks.

For tourist games have representative sides play them instead of counties. They are no longer first class anyway because teams tend to play 13 or more players. If we ever play tests again on September there could be a red ball game in August. England Lions played South Africa during the Hundred so it is possible. Minor touring sides like SL's development side who came over this season could be moved to August against a representative side. I don't see why we need to offer counties to play these games. When we tour abroad we very rarely play an established first class team.

It may not be much but it would give a bit of breathing space to the supposedly
overstretched calendar.

Go and have a look back to before your meltdown, it’s there in black and white.

No its not, you are criticisng people suggesting shedules for the next years that involve the 100, even though you say yourself its not being cancelled

you've had an utter meltdown for absolutely no reason

Personally I think it’s clear and obvious with the remit that Strauss had that cancelling the hundred was never going to happen.

So for the hundred haters which fair enough they is many the blame for it should fall solely in the hands of the ECB and not Strauss!!

To call Strauss all the names under the sun for not suggesting cancelling the hundred in his performance review is extremely unfair imo and it was never going to happen with the remit he had.

Furthermore I suspect most know that but are still persisting he calling Strauss

Given the abundance of F bombs and smileys you were throwing about last night, I was right the first time.

Not at all

You just criticised me and accused me of supporting the 100 for saying it’s not getting cancelled,..then admitted it’s not getting cancelled

People are trying to have a rational discussion about the schedule and you derailed it with this agressive shite

He’s spot on

You’ve just admitted it’s not getting cancelled then criticise Strauss for working in that remit

Crackers Brandon you’ve totally lost me

Keep slagging him off for being from a public school though, really sensible stuff and extremely helpful

For anyone that missed it, Marty was on Total Sport last night speaking about this. It was an excellent, well thought out and impassioned defence of county cricket.

Skip to 1:35:37 to get the introduction to it.

Good. Hopefully that’ll mean you’ll stop following me around dripping on like a broken tap as you have been.
