Obviously there's many reasons to call them it now, but am I right in thinking it was the press that used it back in the day when they got up to their pitch invasion antics to try and stop games? I'm sure I've seen the front pages before.

Not sure about the term, but their first pitch invasion to my knowledge was against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup (1974?). They were losing and then invaded the pitch and won the game. Martin O’Neill played in the match iirc.
