Looking at the positives.

He got you out of league one and you have a side that IMO can complete in the championship.

Now hypothetically, if you were a championship side and your manager had left and you appointed Alex Neil, I've no doubt it would be all a bit meh to most fans, as he is hardly a world beater and goes stale after a while.

Hopefully you will appoint someone who can take the club forward. There are many managers out there that would love to manage Sunderland, especially now your back in the championship.
Right now Id snap your hand off for just avoiding relegation. This squad is limited, essentially the same that got humped 6-0 by Bolton in League 1. Neil has worked wonders building togetherness and playing beyond their ability. I totally believe it was an emotional goodbye, and that the players made their feelings known to the board. He had built something from nothing here.

Why is he saying he wasn't backed? You've spent money we could only dream of so far in this window (FFP restrictions). Is he saying he didn't want the players you've brought in? They seem to be Neil type players from his time at Preston etc?
From what I've heard, he's used this excuse when leaving every club.

AN has them massively overperforming.

Any decent manager would have got us going, based upon our squad.

Johnson made a mess of things, but we were doing well the first quarter of the season.

Neil has done well and I thank him for it but there are some good players in this squad. It’s not solely down to him.

Recruitment is vitally important. I think Neil is doing / has done a fantastic job with what he has at his disposal. If recruitment is as good as you suggest, it should be somewhat straight forward for any semi competent manager to come in and do well.

We’ll see if that materialises

A competent manager should be able to get a squad with this talent finishing around mid table. Neil was doing an excellent job so far meaning we were hoping to exceed that.

Now, thanks to the unprofessional actions of this little twat, we're going into a big game under a huge amount of unnecessary pressure, with an unsettled squad and on the back foot looking for a new manager.

Downies a **** man. I’m not on Twitter but I bet he never comments on Sunderland unless it’s shit for us. Imagine Neil telling the players, “lads I didn’t want it to come to this, I wanted to stay but they wouldn’t allow me to replace the shit ones amongst you. That’s why I have to go”
