Leicestershire v Durham RL50

I think the RL 50 has been successful in that it's aim is to be a development tournament for emerging players. We've competed in Most games and given that we've effectively been without both overseas players can look back with some satisfaction. Gibson, Maclinden and Killeen have certainly benefited and developed, had we just one overseas player to provide the backbone of our innings I'm confident many of our defeats would have been reversed.Certainly a far more encouraging campaign than the T20 even though the respective league tables don't show it.

This guy has to work for the club.

We played our overseas player in every game and he was terrible. Dreadful signing.

All teams played their young players.

Some good performances today but it's still going to be another defeat. We seem to lack the killer (no pun intended) instinct to finish sides off.

In the Somerset game they look like they could win that so we could finish bottom of the group thanks to the ECB.
Blaming the ECB for finishing bottom of the league is a stretch… blame the people at the top of the tree for their signings and selections when they knew which players they would be without.

Durham were/are missing key players due to England and Hundred, so are every other county as well, so that cannot be used as sole excuse.

On doneathy - I have heard he has been falling short of the fitness standards the club are setting nowadays and not doing much to try and improve. Not sure on the truth in it but appears the club are not going to pick him in at 11 until he hits the levels they have determined ‘minimum’..

This sounds a worry though as ever it can be chicken and egg. If the team are shit and not encouraging him that he'll play then standards can often slip. Not to defend poor standards but there's often two sides to every story - in th same way your story shows maybe it isn't on Franklin + co

Yep I heard similar too about this but then again I remember hearing a while back that one or two of the senior players didn’t pass the fitness standards yet they were allowed to carry on playing? Maybe Doneathy isn’t happy with how this has played out in that if other players can carry on playing why can’t he and that why should a simple fitness test hinder him from gaining valuable experience in the competition with a lot of opportunities to score runs and take some wickets??

Is strange as he's been sub fielder the last two games. All very weird this season. I'll be glad when it's over.

Whilst there is no denying that the two finds of Macalindon and Mackintosh have been very good and hopefully young Killeen and Gibson will develop, there is no denying that this has been a dreadful campaign.

To finish with a net zero points in this cup is not good enough. We have had as many senior players in our team as every other team, and in some cases more and yet we have finished bottom. Could Bushnell, Doneathty and even Eckersley as a batter have played rather than an overseas player who has failed to reach 45 in over 14 innings since he arrived.

The recriminations and key decisions must wait until the season is over but a total of 5 wins, one of which was relinquished, from 32 games is way off and surely answers must be provided as to how these shortcomings will be put right next season.

Maybe they don't but when he's in the squad and others are failing, he should be given a chance. We are rewarding failure with numerous senior players this year in all competitions and the results reflect that

I think on reflection there has clearly been an issue with Doneathy this season, be it form, fitness or something else. It utterly defies logic to have left him out when the RL50 was clearly the comp to give him more experience.

Let’s see how he does in the 2s next week.

He’s still a young lad and has time on his side.

I blamed the ECB for deducting those two points we had. Otherwise we wouldn't have finished bottom.

Yep. As I understand it, fitness is being ranked above cricketing skills or performance as a criteria for selection.

Is it not about discipline? He is a professional sportsman and in this day and age fitness is important.

Just saying, not having a go at the lad. I like him as a player and hope this all gets resolved for him.

Likewise. Discipline is important. Fitness is important. But it’s no good having a team of well behaved fit lads who aren’t the best cricketers available. Whichever way you look at it, results strongly suggest that the current regime isn’t working.

I have no idea how a competition where we finished bottom losing 7 out of the 8 hands can be described as "encouraging" or "successful", even if some of the young players showed some promise.
