Wear-Tees Derby

When I first started supporting Sunderland, it was us and Boro in the old second division. My dad asked me who I saw as our local rivals and I said Boro. He said, "You will learn to think differently"

Its not a Derby as in playing the mags, but people saying its nowt, have they been too many games between us? There's certainly more of an edge and I've probably found leaving Boros ground more hostile than leaving St James at times.

Far too much whistling past the graveyard by safc fans on this subjetc. Maybe if everyone starts taking it seriously then we may develop an acceptable record against them because in my lifetime it’s absolutely shameful. Fan since 68-69 season.
As I've already said, I count myself lucky that I've seen my club win a trophy and reach a European cup final. Also had the pleasure of seeing amazing talents like Juninho, Mendieta and Viduka play for the Boro. Same can't be said for Sunderland fans around my age.

As for your comment re our support. We may not get the crowds you get (pretty understandable when you factor in catchment areas and ticket pricing) but we had the third highest average home attendance in the Championship last season, and the best away support in the division. We do alright I'd say.
Catchment areas!
Givower man head six miles or so from our ground and you’re as near to Syd James‘s as ours. You’ve gotta drive eighteen miles to be equidistant from ours n yours.

Worked in Billingham for a year a while back, the place I was at were mainly boro supporters but quite a few of us and the mags.
The difference was ;
Boro didnt like anyone, including themselves.
Safc were all canny, reasonable and tolerant folk.
Mages were just as arrogant and delusional as they are today.

what has 6 miles got to do with it. A catchment area is only as big as the area you draw the bulk of your support. Boro's is mainly drawn from the 3 Teesside borough's of Stockton Middlesbrough and Redcar, other than that we get a few, very few from south Durham and also get some from north north Yorkshire. However this Yorkshire area is big, thinly populated and full of farmers, not your typical footie fans. On the other hand the mags and Yourselves have free reign in Durham, Tyne and Wear and Northumberland. However you split it that's around 2 plus million people you can draw from.

Nothing to stop you drawing from south Durham (or anywhere come to that.) it’s a lot easier to get to your place than ours from there. Build better.

Someone needs to take a "THIS IS NOT A DERBY" banner to the match just to show those child friendly weirdos.

Ok let’s cut through the bull now.

This is just our way of putting them down. It’s a derby, but our main rivals are Newcastle.

It’s not as emotionally involving as a game against the Mags but geographically it is still a derby.

The way I see it is they are our rivals this season and we need the 6 points that the games hold.

So for that reason I really want to beat them.

When my London pals used talk about the Tees / Wear derby I simply asked them if they considered Aresenal v Watford to be a derby. After all Highbury is only 18 miles from Watford whereas Sunderland is a full 30 miles from Middlesbrough.

How about the Tottenham v Luton derby a distance of only 24 miles?

A derby takes place between clubs that occupy the same town or city or at very least the same conurbation or metropolitan area. Places where you can expect the fans of the the two teams to come in to regular contact with one another and where their communities live on one another's doorstep. Places where having the bragging rights will mean the majority of one club's fans will get the opportunity to rub it in at work or down the pub etc on a daily basis - not just when they are next be passing through Billingham whenever that might be.

I know there are outposts of Lads fans that do live close to Middlesborough but that does not make the game a derby. There is a very large outpost of SAFC fans who live in London bit no one would argue for a single minute that made our London games derbies
