Bilbao Black Cats / Athletic Club Bilbao

I've followed a number of Athletic fan accounts on twitter for years including Pentland Club, Aupa Athletic, and they're both all over this relationship things with the mags. Sick of it all over my timeline today to the point I've unfollowed both accounts. Childish I know but fuck'em, no time for any club that have love-ins with them lot.

Has it ramped up since they became Saudi FC did you notice?

I was at the game and with the Athletic fans before the game. It felt a bit weird being in Newcastle with a red and white top on and being welcome. The Athletic fans are more interested in their own club, they're a friendly bunch and happy to befriend other fans. It's up to our club to look to build the relationship. I can't think why we wouldn't want to. The mag fa who wanted to exchange scarves with me after the game got short shrift though.

Interesting that theyd attempt a fake bond with murderers. Each to their own mind.
Athletic as a club seem to have an appreciation of football history in general…..they recognise what is going on in the wider football world and ….iirc ( @aupaalaves correct me if im wrong ) often award or champion players from other sides for reasons not just of a football nature eg players who spend their whole career at one club

That is correct. The one club player award.

Loose ties I know but

There was also a Basque ship stranded on the Wear during WWII when Bilbao was over-ran by Franco's Italian Fascists in the Spanish Civil War, the parents of a friend of mine met on board at a social. Franco tried to requisition the ship but the High Court ruled against him.
Some Basque children were evacuated during the SCW here and never returned - one of descendants from The East End(?) was in the Echo a few years ago

The Enguitas? Cannit think of many other East End families with Spanish/Basque sounding names.

The Southampton shirt link is too easy a link to make as that's where the ship from Bilbao docked at.

However, Southampton were only a regional team at that time so perhaps not professional whereas we were one of the biggest teams in England.

From what I've seen of the shirt designs of the 3 clubs from that time, Athletic's shirts look much similar to ours than Southampton's.

Needs a bit more investigating which we're determined to do and re-establish and strengthen links we feel have been forgotten.

Southampton were professional from 1894 and the Southern league was a fairly strong league, certainly the equal of Division 2 of the football league. Southampton appeared in the 1900 & 1902 FA Cup final (the first southern team to do so in the professional era), but lost on both occasions.

Aye but would have been spelt Etxebarria if it hadn't been for Franco

Would there not be lots of internal migration on the Iberian peninsula? I know someone called Rees and someone called McLaren and they consider themselves as English as I am. Their descendants haven't lived in Wales or Scotland for at least 150 years.

There are notable figures in Spain with English sounding surnames. None of them really mention the origins of them.

Totally up for it! I have the Bilbao jersey each season because of the colours and know of the north east connections as times passed. On another but similar topic, I have started to gather Sunderland fans in East Lothian (from Roker but liver near Dunbar, dame dot council crew in the old days). There’s a few of us like!
