NUFC/Sportswashing - Summer 2022

We had a presentation at work the other day where someone from the global marketing team was banging on about how great it is that we’re doing business in the Middle Eastern region as it’s very lucrative and we can make loads of money from it 🙄

At the end when she asked for questions I piped up and said “a lot of these countries have poor records in relation to human rights, against women and homosexuals for example. What due diligence is done before we begin doing business with these and how does it fit in with our ESG frameworks?”

Her answer directly referenced the PIF organisation, saying that they have actually got females on their board of directors because they’re really trying hard to change.

I since looked it up and they don’t have any female board members. Just 9 fellas. They have 2 females in their executive management team of 13: head of compliance, and general secretary to the board.

Thankfully I made my mind up a while ago that I don’t want to be working there much longer and the above has cemented my decision
They just want an absolute dictator that tries

This - not one player has been signed that is any different to the level of players they signed under Uncle Mike

Trippier I think is the exception. I can't imagine Mike would have done that.

But that was a signal of intent. That has built up their hopes beyond what is realistic. Since then Wood (hahaha) Bruno (unproven/overrated) Botman (unproven in the PL) Burn....

All very much Big Mike signings

I don't think we'd have got Bruno and Botman under Big Mike
Would like. Neither of those are big name high profile players. Mitrovic and Wjinaldum were of equal standing in the game at the time of signing, and Joelinton’s fee equals that.

Dross like Dan Burn, Matt Target, Chris Wood and Trippier are all way worse in profile than the likes of Campbell, Ben Arfa, Alan Smith or Viduka.

It’s also worth noting that you are continuing to work within the FFP structures that Mike was. There hasn’t been any investment strategy deviation from working within those confines.

Of course you would have. You've signed top players under him. Wijnaldum, Ben Arfa, Loic Remy, Debuchy, Cabaye, Ba, Saint-Maximin to name a few.

Remy is the prime example of a mag signing.

Turns up. Plays well enough that the average fan claims hes a decent signing, Newcastle fans and media hype him up to the max. Gets a big money move to a club of much higher standing..

Gradually fades into obscurity, because bigger club realises they signed the big fish in a very small pond, and actually he is nowhere near as food as media/mags make out

(See also Demba Ba, Cabaye... probably St. Maximin and Bruno in a few years). Say what you like about them, they're great at making everyone believe mediocre players are world class and moving them on

The attitudes clearly are separate. That's why it upsets the Twitter Saudis. Weird that you think it's all some sort of Machiavellian scheme of MBS and not just a continuation of the clubs (and the west's) values despite the Saudi ownership.

It seems like a funny strategy to me. Buy a club and promote equality and diversity, combat discrimination etc to make human rights abuses back home more palatable? Doesn't even seem plausible does it? It only makes them look worse by comparison. Bit of a sports washing own goal if you ask me
You are lost. Utterly, utterly lost. Sportswashed fools like you are the reason they are doing this job done. Despite the ownership? You are purposely putting your fingers in your ears when it comes to the ownership. The ksa make every decision to do with your club. Who do you think makes the decisions like? This will be funny

We wouldn't pay the loan fee for Hamza Choudry under Big Mike.

It's funny to see differing opinions on players though. Trippier dross. Debuchy a top player.

I see Maxi is a top player now it suits the argument. Sure I read he's a show pony with no end product on here. Great stuff

Why? I had never heard of either before you signed them

Bruno looks good tbf but Botman could be good or absolute shite - time will tell

Signed similar level players under Mike, I know you can’t bear to believe that but it’s absolutely true

How am I putting my fingers in my ears? I'm discussing it. You're just spouting fanciful nonsense. That's not making for a good discussion.

But fair enough. MBSs evil sports washing master plan is to send out pro diversity tweets from the club's Twitter account. Not exactly Bond villain type stuff but you're free to believe what you want

I am not sure one sunderand fan has said Trippier is dross. I would have thought it was clear st maximin was one of your better signings. wouldn't pay the loan fee for Choudry as if that's fact. He paid in excess of 20m for Willock.

Is it? So when I find myself disgusted by the homophobic Saudi reactions on Twitter to my club supporting Pride month, that constitutes sports washing working on me?

Isn't it supposed to work in the opposite way? Like, my opinion of Saudi culture would raise instead of fall?

I think you're going to have to show your working on this one, because your take on it makes absolutely no sense at all. Would love to know how you got there
I’m getting a bit bored with these very similar responses mind. Almost as if you don’t have much left to say.

Reputation laundering is about using the emotional power of entertainment, a party, even food (Gastrodiplomacy) to improve people’s distaste of the people putting on the show, the earliest on record being “bread and circuses” in Ancient Rome.

If Russia is so bad, why did they lay on the Sochi Olympics eight years ago at a cost of £43 billion for three weeks?

If Qatar’s human rights are being questioned, why are they hosting a World Cup which will cost them an incredible amount of money?

If Saudi Arabia’s human rights for women are so bad, why are they sponsoring five women’s golf teams?

The Saudis have been buying up Snooker, Formula One and Golf for years because that’s all they could get their hands on.

Thanks to corrupt politicians in the UK they’ve moved it up a notch.

Until recently they’ve been hoying ridiculous amounts of money and using the reflected glory to boost their geopolitical image.

Now they’ve adopted the stroppiest, most insecure fans in European football, given them a Mam and Dad, dressed them up in the Saudi Flag and paid them an allowance to stay up rather than showering them in cash.

Exciting to see what happens next 😄

Maxi is not, and never has been a "top player". But he's about the best you have in a very mediocre squad.

But because your fans rate anyone in a black and white shirt as "world class", "Among the best" or "England material" you all massively overrate him.

He's a one trick pony with a serious attitude problem. But he can beat a man. That will always get attention when it works, and there will always be clubs who will take a punt on him sorting out the lack of commitment.

If he goes for 40 or 50 million, he's massively overpriced and its exactly the kind of business you'd have been up in arms about had Ashley done it
Government

Are they insistent that it's Saudi women?

If so then get onto the BBC as that's huge! Even if it's just foreign women I would be getting the word out there. Saudi is changing!

Or maybe you are making it up.

You are proper sportswashed like. Of course it makes sense, because now your club is saudi franchise fc, people will think 'oooh, look at that, saudi franchise players with rainbow laces, they have changed' . Its to try and soften their image, so they can carry on being twats in their own country, without questions being asked. You really don't get it, do you? And ,aye, mbs is an evil b#stard, and a modern day bond villain, contrary to what you are putting across, you brainwashed apoligist
