Don't know which Liverpool teams you were watching but Terry Mc was the legs late 70's early 80's, they had a competition every season, most goals, TMc won every time, Souness alludes to it in his book, he's even called himself a sitting midfielder live on Sky.
He got his fair share of goals but you could never describe as the same type of player as Bryan Robson, Steven Gerrard (although he moved back for the last few years his career), Frank Lampard, a late career Scholes, an early career Keane, a David Platt or a Michael Carrick.
Souness got forward enough but used his intelligence to spot the opportunity, and he was playing with brilliant players who could pick his run, but most of the time he was the one providing the pass.

He wasn’t just a sitting midfielder, he was more than that he got himself around the park.
If you’re telling me he just sat in front of the back four then I’m not sure what you were watching.
 
There's a difference between being "hard", and being a thug.

And as regards the former category, I've yet to see anyone harder than Norman Whiteside, the original Shankill Skinhead.

While a Liverpool fan once told me that the only time he ever saw Steve McMahon bottle it in a game was when he was up against Whiteside - "Absolutely shat himself", was how I think he put it.
 
Hard man is the one who takes the two footed tackle from the dirty player , smiles then clatters him next challenge.

Souness, Keane , McMahon , Harford, Jones, Ferguson and Ball are 7 of those of latter years but sure McNab and co were like that.

You could never in a million years, describe Souness as "box to box". He was a midfield general, an enforcer who could kick with the best & play with the best of them

It depends on your interpretation of a box to box midfielder.
My interpretation of a box to box midfielder is a Bryan Robson, a Terry McDermott, a David Platt, an early career Roy Keane, someone who doesn't get to involved in the build up of play but will make a 3rd man run to finish off a move.
Souness didn't do that consistently, his game was dictating the play, like Glenn Hoddle or Ray Wilkins.....but you already know that, you're just being pedantic (or you didn't see Souness play).

He was described as a holding midfielder and he wasn’t. I wasn’t being pedantic I simply gave an opinion which differs from yours and you don’t seem to be able to handle that.
