Women’s Euros 2022

Just don't watch?

Over 4 million people watched the first England game. Hardly minority is it.

Almost 12m watched the England semi final at the Women's World Cup back in 2019. Second highest audience of the year, only beaten by one of the England matches at the Rugby World Cup.

There's an audience for it, and it's one of the sports with the biggest growth potential.

BBC are a public broadcaster, and half the public are women. Yet some people think it should only serve their own personal interests....

Remarkable isn't it that people don't have this same kind of attitude towards Netflix, Prime or Disney+

.. Who do you think would win between England Women and San Marino? ..
Who do you think would win Elaine Thompson-Herah or Adam Gemili? (Womens record holder vs British male sprinter)

Serena Williams vs Nick Kyrgios? I assume no one is arguing that Nick Kyrgios is better than Serena Williams?

And on last nights performance I would probably put my money on the England Women, they were phenomenal.

I really find it puzzling that because I don’t see the attraction of woman's football I’m seen as a misogynistic dinosaur.
I don't think it's not seeing the attraction that gets called out. Claims that broadcasters are obsessed with it will be picked up on though. Were there any complaints about the BBC showing women's matches at Wimbledon? I'd not go out of my way to watch tennis but it didn't bother me that it was on.

Seems to be based more around a resentment that women's football (and going off previous threads on here, women in football) are being shown in a higher profile than they have been before.

This might not go down too well but why are the BBC pushing this sport down our throats on their main channel?
Unbelievable the coverage for this minority sport.
It's getting bigger crowds than any other 'minority sport' and bigger crowds than clubs outside the top two divisions.

I'm not sure the point that you're trying to make with this?
.. You knocked goals off for Rooney.. Do you think the lasses would have scored ..

The game would be stopped after 15 minutes with England 5 or 6 down . But that is not relevant. My view is that the coverage of women's football is out of proportion to the interest in the game. However that does not negate the fact that it is a valid sport and it is up to viewers to switch off if switch on. The BBC in my view gave over the top coverage of the Boris saga. The BBC will have their reasons and we either have to like it or lump it.

Exactly, the growth potential is massive. And people forget that the standard of women's football has improved radically in the last 5-10 years. That just doesn't happen if it doesn't get wide scale exposure and the subsequent flow of investment.

The amount of people who seem to unaware or are deliberately ignoring the fact that women's football was banned for 50 years or so, is very telling.

The original point I was responding to was that the men don't get to play in one sided games where they get a boat load of chances, which just isn't true.

Rooney played 4 games v San Marino, tbh its a bit embarrassing he didn't put more than 5 past them.

The point is with any of these services you're also paying for a shitton of stuff you'll never ever watch.

The OP appears to feel forced to watch it on a service he is forced to pay for though. Netflix is totally optional. Don't like it, don't buy it. Don't pay for the BBC you end up in court.

\Still don't know what the problem is with having a world cup tournament on TV, mind. Not my cup of tea but give me that over 12 hours of Wimbledon or Mrs Brown's Boys any day of the week.

Most of the women's Euros is either on BBC2 (Unless it's England) or iPlayer anyway

Im assuming the posters decrying woman’s football are young lads without kids that have nivver given a thought to possibly fathering daughters in the future and wanting them to be able to follow their dreams. If they’re old lads with daughters, grand daughters, nieces etc then the worlds in a bigger mess than I thought.

Woman's football is great, I hope my daughter starts playing when she's older. I hope England win the tournament.....but in no way is it on a par with men's football.
I've not said it is (or isn't) on a par, I'm saying that the men's game doesn't have the right to be termed 'just football' any more than the women's game does.
It IS ALL football.

The BBC 'ramming it down our throats' comments are just ridiculous. They don't have the rights to many sporting events left - but they do with this tournament. Therefore the sheer economics of producing cheap TV, to decent sized audiences makes perfect sense. Those who don't like it.......just don't watch it ???

The 'comparison to the men's game' comments are equally ridiculous. It's a stand-alone sport and the women playing against each other are the best in this particular sport in their respective countries. Just enjoy it for what it is.
