Women’s Euros 2022

I have no issue with it being on, it is their euro championships at the end of the day. I wouldn’t personally choose to watch it as the womens football I’ve seen hasn’t been of a very good standard).

What I do find weird now though (and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t always like this) on the sky TV guide, and on sky sports news etc, the fixtures/scores have no mention of the fact it’s a womens game. For example On the planner today it says

MOTD Live: Austria v Northern Ireland

Eilidh Barbour introduces live action from st Mary’s stadium as Austria faces Northern Ireland in Group A.

Now if I didn’t know any better that reads as though it’s a mens fixture, no mention of the fact it’s womens. I just find that weird tbh, and we all know the motives behind it.
BBC would do this on their app a few years ago.

“Chelsea beat Man City to sign Arsenal striker” Then you’d click it and find out it’s womens football. Then they got called out for showing how many people followed links to womens football

Tonight's game was one sided enough, the England team didn't need 50 more years!

I do think it's shit when I've seen football news/fixtures be announced as if it's men's football by not mentioning "women's", that is an agenda. But the BBC showing matches is exactly what they should be doing, there's more interest than ever, I would never have watched 10 years ago, now I do.
I would say they don't say men's football when announcing fixtures either.

It is great to have a tournament on to watch. Some really good football being played. France were great yesterday too, their attacking 4 were phenomenal.

One thing I miss is a highlights show actually, I want more coverage haha

I was a bit surprised when the commentary on the BBC said "she needs a goal to break Wayne Rooney's goal scoring record for England" 🤔

I fully support the Women's game and the promotion of it but that's hardly the same record ⚽

Do that on the ceefax to the point that I just stopped bothering all together.
Daft, people will just start resenting it

Mental aren't they?

This is exactly what BBC should be doing. Without BBC there would be no massive darts or snooker tournaments.
People watch women’s tennis and hardly anyone moans that they are watching inferior sport . Jessica Ennis would be rubbish in the decathlon.
I’ve watched both England games and will continue to do so. I wouldn’t be watching eastenders or the one show so I’m more than happy.
Haway the lasses

That is a nonsense. They are separate sports.

Anyone else reckon women’s football should have smaller goals to compensate for the lack of height of keepers? If a 6 ft 6 male keeper can get beaten at the far post then what chance does a 5 foot 10 woman with a far lesser reach?

Admittedly I haven’t been a dedicated watcher of women’s football to know this is a particular problem but high scoring games seems to suggest either the good teams are amazing or the poor teams are extremely poor defensively or have poor keepers.

Norway allegedly had 2 of the best strikers in the world playing yesterday yet were losing 6-0 at half time.

There’s no shame in having a small pool of countries that are competitive. I’m pretty sure rugby and cricket only has about 12 countries that can seriously compete.

The size of the goals was decided about 150 years ago when the height of an average man was a lot smaller. The height of average man from that period of time is around the height of an average woman in current times. Therefore women are playing in the correct size goals and men are playing with goals that are too small.

It’s a fascinating thread this !

I’m not entirely sure the op didn’t envision this outcome when he dropped his incendiary initial post.

I‘m not drawn to watch women’s football but that’s just a personal choice in term of viewing. I do enjoy women‘s athletics, the winter Olympic sports and in a wider sense enjoy female company as least as much if not more than the company of men.

Woman tend to be far more emotionally intelligent, engaging and less cynical.

I really find it puzzling that because I don’t see the attraction of woman's football I’m seen as a misogynistic dinosaur.

I had a little inkling it might be a tad controversial.

He’s entitled to a view.
What’s the big deal with his view anyway? Am I missing something? Is the coverage relative to Interest in the event? Probably not.
Does it matter? No because people have so many other channels to watch now.
Is it elite sport and warrant prime time TV ? Probably not yet but will be in time
What’s ‘elite’? The men’s game
What does the women’s game have to do to become elite? Players have to be technically as good as in the men’s game. In all other sports I can think of they are e.g. Tennis, Golf, Athletics etc.
Is it a good thing to promote a sport to a level it doesn’t yet warrant? Yes because it’s got the potential to positively influence millions of young girls and encourage their participation in sport both playing and supporting. No other sport has the potential or the reach to do this.
Is it public service broadcasting? I think it is
Yes he's entitled to a view, but he doesn't have to ram it down our throats.

The last sentence is incorrect. No one thinks that.

It’s the gonks that want to spout off bullshit that are

The real level of interest from paying customers can probably be gauged from how many free tickets grassroots clubs get given per game for the Mens team and womans teams. For example every womans game in East Anglia and at Wembley i've been offered 15 free tickets for every womans game (We've handed them out to parents and players). We get the same amount offered for U21 mens games (Even offered 15 for the game at Turf Moor) We've never been offered tickets for the mens first team.
The biggest draw back for watching for me is the crowd noise, on TV. Its akin to the South African world cup with just constant noise. It hasnt as yet built up a following, its not so much an atmosphere as constant drone of noise.
