Don’t think we’ll get Doyle back if I’m honest

It doesn't have to be a huge amount in terms of quantity or spend, but I'd really hope we'll add 2 to 3 players who will go straight into the starting 11 and improve it.

With Neil in charge I think we'd probably stay up if he only had last season's squad to work with, but the above would see us pretty comfortable IMO.

Okay, it wasn't then.
It was rumoured to be a 2 year loan before it was announced, it was then announced as a 1 year loan and then our retained list showed him as returning to Man City…

We may well try and get him back for next season if we want to, but the ball is firmly in Man City’s court.

Yeah they would, they’d get opportunities to prove their worth either through sub appearances or necessity as has been the case in the past. Not ousting a veteran player, deemed important by the gaffa, after barely kicking a ball at all.
If they are good enough they play like Patterson like cirkin, young players sometimes get opportunity straight away to show they are good enough

I’ve been encouraged to hear Neil say we need to add quality to the core squad from last season.

If we managed to get Clarke and Broadhead back and Bailey Wright signs a contract we’ll just be pretty much back to where we were.

As good as our form was under Neil I think the fact he continues to emphasise we need quality and the step up in intensity and consistency is huge, reassures me he’s under no illusion as to the challenge ahead this season.

Without significant additions I think last years squad might just about survive but it would be nip and tuck.

What keeps nagging away at me is we spent 4 years in League 1 and never finished above 4th in the table. That in itself is reason to acknowledge the need for increased quality in the squad/team.

Coming together nicely still need at least 2 centre backs, 2 forwards, a GK & another 2 wingers/attacking midfielders imo
Championship cannon fodder at present.
Needs a serious injection of physicality and quality which given how we like to do things on the cheap, doesn't bode well.

The biggest plus for me is the benefit of a full preseason with AN. As a coach he is not well known for putting a lot of prep work in two formation frameworks as the base for his tactical plans throughout the season. The improvement we saw in our organisation was largely done on the fly in a busy part of the season with 2 games a week, so probably one session a week at a good intensity. So I’m looking forward to the additional detail he can insert into the squad.

The adage of the whole being greater than the sum of its individual part is hopefully going to be true, purely to the work done in preseason.

I don’t believe the club will spend on fees. I do believe 5 loans will come in, maybe with an option to buy. And at best we could bring in a couple of out of contract players.

If Neil thought we were going to do things on the cheap, he wouldn't have stayed. I'm sure he'll be getting plenty of offers.

Well he is certainly not going to play for the City first team this coming season so is likely to be going on loan somewhere. Is he ready for the Championship? At times he looked great in League 1 but at other times he looked out of his depth.

Content to let AN decide 😉

We are not going to buy our way out of this league, but then many teams don’t.
It’s going to be interesting to see how we use loans, and out of contract to build a team greater than the sum of its parts as the previous poster said.
I don’t think any team Alex Neil puts together with the resources we have will be relegated from this division.

And that's exactly it - most supporters are happy to let AN decide, because we trust him - that's a great base to start the season from.

I feel the same, would I have him back? Probably yes, but I’m not sure Man City would want him here not knowing if he’s going to be a bit-part player. I think they’ll want him to start every week wherever he is.

I think City will already have decided that he will be sold on sometime soon. They can afford the best defenders in the world so a player has to be Foden quality to break through the ranks.
