Looking for Premier League Prize money history, I found and it shows that in the early 90's the TV money wasn't that great at just under £2m average per team up until 1997 (£192m over 5 seasons between 20 teams). It's not the exact figure and obviously this is just one part of the revenue for a club as it won't include matchday/merchandising/sponsors etc. It would be interesting to know what club revenues were back in the 90s given the growth in other revenues outside of the TV money, especially overseas money as you see in 2nd pic which has probably allowed for the massive growth in transfer figures.

In 1979, Notts Forest paid £1m for Trevor Francis and Shearer was 15 times that 17 years later which had doubled 4 times. Now 26 years later, apart from Neymar and Mbappe (thanks to PSG taking the piss with sponsorship) the next highest transfers are just over £100m without any clauses (I just looked at

Iirc, a large chunk of the money was paid by the brewery sponsorship. John Hall got them to advance the money because Jack Walker insisted on all the money in one go.
We were in the top 5 of the Delloitte money league in 97/98 so could probably afford it. 97/98 we were above Barcelona who had broken the world record in 1996 just before Newcastle broke it.
Probably living hand to mouth in terms of income vs outgoings. Then the stadium extension cost about £42m which was borrowed, and the good time stopped so from 98 onwards the club was getting into debt

Article from Douglas says that Hayden, Clark, Dwight Gayle, Karl Darlow and Matt Ritchie are all for sale

Lascelles and Almiron also touted as being available. Douglas also speculated that Saint Maximin and Dubravka may also be sold.

He says he has been talking to a “senior club source” (Staveley?) so perhaps this isn’t idle speculation.

The club source tells Douglas that it will be “quality not quantity” this summer.

Douglas explains that this is all because “the finances require it” and “the summer will require them to sell well”.

Also says that they might be doing this window without a director of football as the mags won’t pay up for Ashworth.

But some eye catching sponsorship deals incoming, apparently.

Have to say that this sounds like exactly the type of talk you get from every football club owner who’s looking to turn a fast profit.

I wonder if these new sponsors have been convinced that the mags are heading to the top as easily as the fans have been? And will they sign high value deals reflecting that expectation? The mags commercial revenue is supposed to be shit atm, so if Staveley is pulling a fast one, fleecing new sponsors in that area of the business could be one way to do it?

Given how we almost always get hammered there I am fearful, with LFC hot on their heels, City will batter us. 5-0/6-0. At least Aguero is not there to get another hat-trick.

It's called justice. It may not be as punitive as you seem to want, but it's civilised and avoids mob rule. That way leads to anarchy
 
That during a game with Arsenal their kit clashed and so had to change their kit before kick off and that's how they ended up with black and white?
