New Music Releases Thread

Ex-Void's album is out - singer and another former member of Joanna Gruesome. Singles were good (imo) so looking forward to giving it a listen

Yeah, one I'll be giving a listen to.

On another path, the EP by Pigeon, which came out last year digitally but has just had a physical release is stunningly good. A mix of Afrobeat, psychedelia, glam rock, disco and nutjobness.

Destroyer is good on first listen. His usual blend of lounge and synths but it appears better than his previous.

Ibibio sound machine likewise very good. Very much Hot Chip sounding which isn’t surprising as they produced it.

I've listened to the first half of the Destroyer album (then Masterchef came on). It's really good. As you say, lounge and synths, maybe a little more synthy than usual. Tintoretto, It's For You reminds me of Sparks.

My usual weekly roundup of new and newish stuff:

Pigeon: as I mentioned earlier in the thread. A cracking melange of Afrobeat, psychedelia, disco and general madness. Thoroughly recommended!
Destroyer: excellent, perhaps a bit more synthy than usual. Interesting lyrics, warm voice. One of their better albums.
Bart Davenport: part 60s whimsy, part Pavement slacker playfulness. He's a new name to me but seems to have an extensive back catalogue. Really good.
Cowboy Junkies: a covers album. An enjoyable and eclectic range of songs done in the Junkies' style.
Aldous Harding: album number 4 and she's changed sounds a little from Designer. There are touches of Cate Le Bon here, albeit easier to listen to. Excellent.
MWWB: sludgy, Welsh, female fronted psych rock. Very good, if that's your bag.
Ibibio Sound Machine: Hot Chip have done their agic and this is a proper cracker. ISM were always a better prospect live than on record previously and this changes that.
Barrie: indie singersongwriter, female, a bit synthy. Decent enough, some good songs.
The Hanging Stars: they've broadened out their Americana from the UK style to be more of quietly diverting alt-rock prospect. Good train listening.
Ed Schrader's Music Beat: from the same Baltimore scene that brought us both Dan Deacon and Future Islands, this lot are a spikier, rockier prospect. Ed Schrader (who I guess is singing) has a distinct deep voice. Some of it's a bit up, some more downbeat. Interesting.
Branko Mataja: the hidden sounds of old Yugoslavia. This is a compilation of his folkish guitar pieces. It's interesting and, I think, very good.
Denzel Curry: the Bahamian American rapper's fifth album features guests like Saul Williams, Slowthai and Robert Glasper. He's celarly a talent and this is a very fine piece of work.
Ex-Void: spiky, literate indie rock from the former Joanna Gruesomers. Good fun!
Camp Cope: the third album fron the all female, Aussie indie-rockers. I like this. There are flecks of Big Thief at times.
Fucked Up: a compilation of rareities from around the time that they released their superb David Comes To Life concept album. It's worthwhile and pretty good but you can tell why some tracks didn't make the cut for the album.

Album of the Week: actually, EP of the week, it goes to Pigeon. There's a lot of competition from about 8 other artists though. A good week!

Other things to listen to include Weak Signal, Kindsight and Sooner. Nothing amazing, but pleasant enough

This Is Going To Hurt Soundtrack by Jarv Is... is excellent. Physical release comes later in year but it's on spotify and youtube now. It's mostly proper songs with just a few instrumentals.

There are new albums this week from Lights, Meshuggah, PUP, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Warmduscher, Rheinzand, M Ross Perkins, Hannah Peel & Paraorchestra, Michael Weston King, Christian Lee Hutson, Molly Tuttle & GOlden Highway, Field Works, Alabaster Deplume, Pastor Champion, Noon Garden, Confidence Man and Neon Garden.
All about Red Hot Chilli Peppers for me or not
