Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

this is spot on. the Ukraine military spent a lot of time and money on their special operations/forces. you can see that in the various media posts. highly motivated, highly trained, well equipped & fit. mainly small teams operating behind the russian front lines causing mayhem. Russia hasn't moved on as quickly or adapted to the changes in how wars are fought yet. the russian armour can't really fight at night and we're not seeing large tank battles going on. it's small, local engagements chipping away.

It's a great tactic IMHO. They know where the Russians are in the most part, send highly trained, well equipped small forces out to hit and run and harass.

Can't be fun being a Russian soldier at night knowing they might be coming for you, not many will be getting a good night's sleep.

i was in an armoured regiment and i still think mobile weapons systems of some sort are essential to the boots on the ground philosophy but it's about getting the balance right and using all your assets (troops. armour & technology) in support of each other. ukraine seem to be much more advanced or at least prepared for that. the russians used it in syria a fair bit apparently but are playing catch up in ukraine. probably because they underestimated ukraine's capability. it's fascinating to see it play out, although lives are being lost in that process too.
You just have to see the film of the Russian troops jumping out of their armoured carrier and in to the nearest ditch when the were ambushed to see how much they fear the effect of modern anti tank weapons. They didn't even man the machine gun on top of the carrier to surpress the ambushers they just wanted to get away from their vehicles asp.

'stag' duty at night is never great, but if you know that the enemy can see you but you can't see them then that's not a great feeling at all.
