So why has he took this drastic action? What has triggered him?

I dont buy he’s mad/lost the plot. This has been developing for years. I dont buy that its to prevent the spread of NATO because even if he takes Ukraine, NATO is over the border. I dont buy this is to return to the old USSR because again sanctions will bankrupt Russia. Something is not right, why has he done this??

His history, Chechnia, Crimea, et al suggested he would get away with it.
He didn't expect the breadth and depth of sanctions that have been imposed on him.
He overestimated the strength of his army.
He underestimated the will of the Ukrainians.

In short, he's surrounded himself with yes men who tell him what he wants to hear, so no, he didn't know he couldn't win, and possibly still doesn't.

Russia has a declining population and an economy the size of Spain. They'll need to realise at some point they're not a big player on the world stage but just a regional power.

They're a cultured European country, it would be best for them and Europe if they embraced Europe rather than at loggerheads with it. Maybe that's what will happen this century?
