Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

Not open for further replies.

Not followed the nonsense but surely there's enough other threads over on the politics board to sound off about Brexit on without having to disrupt a thread of such importance to the world at large.
This thread has certainly gone to shit since last night as some people on here are just using this thread as a big soapbox to air their political views.

I hoped this thread was for the benefit of all RTG members of which the majority aren't so interested in detailed politics side of things given most joined this board originally as they support the lads. They just want to pop into this thread, share some snippets of updates or get an update of the latest happenings rather than wade through all the political ramblings (which are often repeated views) which some already have threads on in the politics forum.

I can't be arsed with politics and have no interest in it or any political party (they're all twats). Yet I see that the requests to take the excessive political crap to the politics forum is trying to shut them up or posters get called a tory, Brexiter, Putin sympathiser or whatever other shite there is to fling about. I guess this post by Pancho when it got moved out of the politics forum for the same reason means nowt now which is a shame.

https://www.readytogo.net/smb/threads/russia-invading-ukraine.1566159/page-677#post-35657795

@AB22 Easy Tiger has moved this thread from Politics to SMB in the hope that it will cut down the petty bickering much beloved by our politicos.

I think the OP intended this to be a news thread to keep track of this fast changing situation so can we please keep it that way.

If you must have a interminable political squabble then that's what the Politics forum is for.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Whilst effectively drafting the male population and screaming out for international volunteers. I don’t think those are actions of a side winning the conflict unfortunately.

But apparently they’ve stalled?

We’ll see soon enough, numerous media outlets and blue check marks have doubled down on their assessment of the Russia military and have said they’re finished by Sunday due to supplies and so on.

Be interesting to see how they react when this is unfortunately still unfolding next week.

it's a strange scenario. i just can't believe the amount of equipment that's been abandoned, destroyed or captured (even conservative estimates). also i don't think the russian military has progressed from the cold war ideology of just "follow me" into battle and that's quite obviously not working.
even if they take ukraine they don't have the forces to hold it long term, it's also not their strategy. they think they can put a puppet in and fuck off back to their dachas... good luck.

Not sure the rules and red lines are clear.

There is no rule stopping the UK or any country providing ground or military support to Ukraine.

And as for red lines, is the red line NATO membership or how western and rich a country is?

Sweden, Switzerland and Ireland are not in NATO. So to use a hypothetical example, if those three countries were being bombed to shreds by Putin would we still not cross the ‘red line’ and help non-NATO members.

If Dublin is under siege and being wiped off the map would posters here and the UK population be saying “they aren’t in NATO, it’s the rules and it’s not our fight”?
Quite right.

There would seem to be a continuum of willingness to act militarily....

e.g. (Non-NATO members)

Mongolia (Where?)
Kazakhstan - no way!
Georgia - Wasn't that in a Beatles song? Lovely lads, byee.
Ukraine - A lot of them speak Russian anyway, don't they? - Here's a fiver, get yersel a gun.
Moldova - Russians already there. Too scary.
Finland - You asked for it - on the side of the Nazis in WW2
Sweden - OK, that's it. Our Waterloo moment. We won't allow Abba to die....
Austria - Don't even think about it Vlad, I've got 2 weeks skiing booked in October.

Interested to know what % of total Russian army stocks that is. 900+ APCs must have made a dent.

They have little choice. Large equipment is spotted and picked up by intelligence. It’s a target. If it’s broken down, stuck or out of fuel it’s useless and better to get away. Get in another vehicle or flee on foot. Just don’t stay with it as a sitting duck

Steady. Finland weren't on side of nazis. Accepted help which avoided defeat, and then nazis turned on Finland in the continuation war. Finland had "distinction" of fighting both Russia and Germany. Germans burned large areas of Finland on way out.

In truth the Russian won’t disclose their actual losses at this time and it’s within the Ukrainians interest to inflate their successes therefore we’ve actually no clear idea how it’s going.

This column massing outside Kyiv is a mystery, it’s stationary and visible yet the Ukrainian artillery and airforce are notably absent in targeting this.

Unfortunately suggesting to me that this conflict isn’t going well for the Ukrainians.

The majority voted to Leave. Some people Remainers, are still living in the past.Leave voters have no need to moan, they succeeded. Grow up or move to the continent.
There has been a majority to join and then to leave. There can be further referendums. At the moment it's difficult to see any benefits to Brexit at all. But if you can think of one, get in touch with William Rees Mogg as he has put out an appeal.

Russian gear being made to look shite, despite the names t90 and t80 they're are only updated t72's and t64's. but basically the running gear is a 50/60 year old design and will break down due to age and lack of maintenance

How do we help them though, if they can’t get out of Ukraine because they don’t have any money how does relaxing our immigration rules help them

I’m not saying that rules shouldn’t be relaxed but that a bigger spotlight needs to be shone on those who are unable to flee and how we help them. At the moment they appear to being ignored
Waiving vids requirements and creating a safe route of passage to the uk would help

Those left behind are not in ally under the care of the international Red Cross and other humanitarian charities, but I fear that many of them will still suffer horribly

What has affected you ,other than living in denial since 2016 ? Don't like it, change it,nothing stopping you leaving for greener climates. The world is your oyster.

It’s stalemate. The Ukrainians can’t risk losing aircraft and artillery going out after the column and leaving less in reserve to save Kyiv. I think they are keeping their proverbial powder dry so that they have maximum fuel and machinery left for when the siege of Kyiv starts in earnest.

they've lost 'regiments' it's as simple as that. by that i mean they'll have to pull regiments back from the front (or allow reserves to push ahead) and backfill those losses from elsewhere until those regiments are back up to strength and get back in the line.
regiments/battle groups/divisions/armies only work in one way. they're really structured. if one falls you need another to come in and take their place. if you don't you end up trying to keep moving forward with one week element and they will be found out. the russians are relying on overwhelming force which "might" get them through.

however, I mentioned earlier that the Ukrainian military has invested heavily in special forces. small, independent units that are seeking out and ambushing russian advances (who are using open communications to let everyone know where they are).

the concern of course is the massive amount of artillery and airpower the russians have and the dreadful effect on civilians.

  one of the best lines, ever...
