Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

Maybe, but I'd argue allowing him to back off now (even if he is "saving face") is the best chance of a regime change. The anti-war sentiment is clearly there in Russia right now. Putin has never seemed weaker domestically. While he's at war they'd never depose him. But Russia has a history of changing it's leaders after failed military campaigns.
Agree with that. Putin needs a face saving way out to deescalate this. The trouble is, what would he accept? We can't expect Ukrainians to give up any part of their country, but any less will be seen as a defeat for Putin no matter how he spins it. This might sound callous (but as its against putin I don't care) but we just need a way of kicking the can down the road because the horrible old **** can't be far away from death, so if we can stop the bloodshed then we play the waiting game until the old **** dies and, hopefully, as new generations of Russians become the ones in power, they'll be much less inclined to war monger like he has. Fuck knows what the right move is mind

I really cannot understand your stance. What should the Ukrainians have done?

The woman holding her baby absolutely distraught got me😢
In the last few posts people are saying about being choked seeing pictures of fathers saying goodbye to kids, etc….what for? To fight in war that more than likely can’t be won. My question is, is it worth it? Is the loss of life and destruction worth it?

My stance is coming from taking emotions out of it, once you get emotional about it then we’re prone to act/react in ways that aren’t necessarily the best.

The idea solution would have been for the Ukrainian and Russian governments to go to a great big clearing in Siberia and slug it out themselves. Leave the innocent Ukrainian and Russian folk out of it.

Ukraine wanted to be in the EU for a long time but weren’t allowed, corruption being one of the reasons. Both governments aren’t exactly great….to draw innocents into a pointless war is abhorrent.

Just about every poster who is calling for action, to stand up to Putin is acting on emotions, emotions of what they’re seeing and it’s completely understandable, it’s horrific. It goes up all sorts of unjust, uncomfortable feelings of wanting to fight back. Sometimes though, the sensible thing to do to win a war is to give away a battle and fight another day in a different way.
They do enslave you though.

I can see your point there mind it just rankles with me that people are feeling sorry for the poor lads destroying Ukraines cities and killing their people

I'm sure you can see what I mean
I do understand what you're saying, but I think we can and should be better than that. The nuance is important. I don't think it's fair to say that people on here who are essentially just taking an anti-killing stance, are in some way sympathetic to the destruction and bloodshed of the Russian army. It's more that we don't want anyone dead on either side, except maybe the people who are behind this whole sorry mess.

It's also totally possible to wish an end to the conflict, so no more bloodshed, but the individual Russian soldiers and commanders who committed the most terrible of acts to be tried in the Hague for war crimes.

I read an article on the BBC today about how some of the British-Russian community fear repercussions in this country. That, again, comes from a lack of critical understanding of the situation. People assume that one awful leader, with power and influence, speaks for everyone. When I think the protests and social media posts show that the Russian people are not in support of this war, particularly the communities who live outside of the community.

@AB22 Easy Tiger has moved this thread from Politics to SMB in the hope that it will cut down the petty bickering much beloved by our politicos.

I think the OP intended this to be a news thread to keep track of this fast changing situation so can we please keep it that way.

If you must have a interminable political squabble then that's what the Politics forum is for.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Yeah it's horrible.

I saw another video a few days ago that showed volunteers picking up guns and wrapping yellow tape around their arms. They said that shows they're volunteers.

Mind, every video I've seen with soldiers in it has them wearing the yellow tape so they must have a lot of volunteers.
Most of the phone footage is from the volunteers. The professional soldiers won’t be too fused bout phone footage.
