in 2005, he was trying as hard as any of the Aussies, of course, but always thought he secretly was quite happy for England to end the long run of Ashes misery.

Same here. Am shocked. You know you are a great of the game when the English love you. He terrorised us as a player but you couldn't help admire him or be in awe of him and however painful it was to watch, you couldn't look away.
So sad at the thought we'll never hear him commentate again as well. He might have had some critics, and made little effort to hide his views on the likes of Mitchell Starc and Alastair Cook at times, but in general I loved his commentary and looked forward to hearing him when he came over for our summer. And his insight into leg spin and bowling in general was pure gold. We've lost some class acts from the comms box recently, Gower, Beefy, Bumble, Mikey Holding and now Warney, sad sad times.

I remember reading a story from him about the 2005 Ashes at the Oval.
The crowd had been bantering with him all day and they started singing ‘we only wish you were English’.
He turned to face the crowd, doffed his flappy hat and did a little bow with a tear in his eye.
A throughly good bloke and a brilliant cricketer.
A massive loss.

Of all the celebrity deaths I've read about over the years, this has shocked me the most. Absolutely devastated by the news. My first Ashes series was 1997 at the age of 10 and I found him mesmerising, I couldn't believe his talent. Then to be lucky enough to watch him play in 2005 was something very special. As has been said, the feeling of dread when he came on to bowl was audible around the ground. It feels all the more poignant to have been part of the crowd on the final day at the Oval singing "there's only one Shane Warne"

Absolutely gutted about this. What a star the bloke was. Supremely talented and a huge character. A nemesis for England but a pleasure to watch. I'm absolutely gutted about this.
I used to love watching the Big Bash League when Warney was playing. He was miked up and priceless talking through the game. Will always remember this one when described what he'd bowl to Brendan McCullum.
