Shane Warne RIP

Loved watching him and since his retirement listening to him on the cricket coverage absolutely shocked to hear this news.

It just shows you though how delicate and frightening life can be.

This has knocked me back. I met Shane at the Riverside in his final days with Hampshire. My daughter was with me. She was about 11 at the time. We talked for ten minutes and he was so lovely. Some things you never forget. One of my heroes is gone. Far too early. So sad today. RIP The King.

He never did get a Test century (highest was 99 against New Zealand) but I remember him getting a 90-something against England before getting caught on the boundary going for a big hit. The English crowd initially laughed at his failure but it soon turned into a standing ovation as he walked off the field.

Always played the game the right way - hard but fair and with a smile.

He was looking good for one at Edgbaston. Stood on his own stumps iirc

What a tremendous bowler. A pure natural.

Occasionally in sport you see someone who is so natural they are just a genius , they just don’t need to work at their art and he was one of them.

Good leg spinners had come and gone but this man’s control was what set him apart. Aggressive-in the right way- and a massive desire to win.

My favourite cricketer of the last 30 years.

This was the one I was thinking about

Shane Warne c Giles b SP Jones 90
76.2 short ball banged in Warne impulsively hooks, it's hit well but not well enough to clear Giles on the fence. That is a key wicket 287/8

Giles may have been the King of Spain, but Warne really was the King of Spin.

It would have been the icing on the cake for that series had Warney got his maiden test ton on the same ground he got his first Ashes wicket.

IIRC he wasn't close to one at Edgbaston, I think he got about 40 and Australia only needed another 50 or so when he got out.

I'm gutted.

The king of spin.

Best cricketer to play the game in my lifetime.
A typical Aussie.
Played hard, lived it to the max.
R.I.P Warney.
