A couple of helicopters taken out in the first video. The second one is from St.Petersberg, apparently the police beat the girl, she lost consciousness, they refused to call an ambulance and dragged her onto the bus.

Aye there was a foreign policy expert on LBC over the weekend saying just that. If this was Estonia you could kind of see Putin’s end game - occupy long term. He could do that in a small country like Estonia with a relatively modest armed presence.

However Ukraine is an enormous country with over 40 million people in it. The majority of whom clearly hate Russia and will resist until Russia is gone. As you say, Russia would need to “chase out” the elected government all across the country to the west, effectively conquering the entire Ukraine. That would be a long and costly process for Russia - look at the logistical problems they are encountering now, supplying their soldiers near Kyiv. Imagine how much tougher it would be for them to press soldiers as far west as Lviv?

Then even if they did take the whole country, they would need to leave tens (hundreds?) of thousands of Russian troops behind long term, just to hold on to it and prop up a puppet government.

The whole thing makes no sense. Putin really does seem to have backed himself in to a corner.

Also Putin must be surprised how tough the West have reacted, he took over Crimea and supported Russian separatists in the east for years and got a tap on the wrist for his bad behaviour. It emboldened him to take the rest of the country and he knew there would be costs from the West but thought it was more being sent to bed without his dinner than the destruction of the Russian economy and made a pariah state.

Someone came up with an excellent point yesterday on here that if Ukraine had been submissive to the invading Russians there would be few sanctions and the news would be some celebrity's new haircut. Ukraine will keep fighting and when the Russians win they will resist, it's an unwinnable war and Churchill is bang on when he said in 1940:

Nations that go down fighting rise again, but those who surrender tamely are finished. If our long island story is to end, let it be only when we lie choking in our own blood.”

Updated: apparently they're also getting 14 Su-25's which do have close air support/ground attack capability. a fairly old aircraft
the Frogfoot is the Russian A10 equivalent - i'm not sure i'd want to be in one of them if i'm going up against any sort of modern air defense network

The Polish Mig29's will be very useful as i believe they're late model / upgraded Mig29's with all the bells and whistles, the Migs from the other places, probably less so
They need a squadron of A10's, the column of tanks would be gone in minutes
big gun go BRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTT, tanks go BOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM

Sorry like, but what Churchill said might have held credence in he 1940's but not now. Nigh on 80yrs have passed, I'd like to think the civilised aspect of our society has progressed from messages designed to inspire innocent people fighting wars.

These were shared by my friend Olesia an hour ago, she is in Kharkiv. The only good thing to come out of this is that I know that at 8.00am this morning, at least, her and her two boys (Aged 3 & 1) are alive.

The central square, the regional state administration building in Kharkiv

It sounds callous but this is why the whole thing resonates. We can feel sorry for people in “war torn” Africa but we don’t identify with them. Some would say that is racist but it’s human nature. I feel like I would love to be Ukrainian. They seem such a fantastic set of people. (I’m sure they have their faults)

It's an uncomfortable truth but it is a truth.

I feel closer to this than most as my wife is Ukrainian. I've been to Kiev many times and it's like any other European city, this could easily be London, Paris, Budapest, Copenhagen, etc. She touted my thoughts on us moving to Kiev about 5 years ago but I don't speak the language and the UK is home and I would never leave. The most potent gun I've fired is a .22 air rifle and it's amazing to think on another timeline I could be there now with an AK47 shooting at human beings.
