Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

We're being bombarded at the moment with propaganda stories of Ukrainian heroism, Putin is unhinged, Russia is losing etc but the truth is that Russia is more than capable of getting its own way and killing thousands of people - people seem to have lost sight of that. They've fought this war with kid gloves on so far (relatively speaking).

This whole conflict is completely stupid and will probably end when Ukraine agrees not to join NATO, which is a sensible compromise that could have been reached a long time ago before all this stupidity and loss of life.
I thought this when I saw the map of the parts they have got so far. They are making progress, maybe not as fast as they hoped but they are definitely closing in.

Last Monday I would have agreed but a line has been crossed. it's shit or bust.

Russia want's Ukrainian neutrality had it taken this stance then arguably this conflict doesn't happen. It's also one of the conditions reported two days ago before the peace talks today.

Wanting to join NATO is one thing for the benefits, but don't be ignorant to the fact this is in line with American foreign policy and increasing the sphere of influence. It's suffocating Russia in a way and bringing more and more military closer and closer to its border. It's as if were neighbours and we share a fence and every six months I'm moving it 4 inches into your side.

Maybe so, but I can see a valid argument as to why this conflict has been brewing and inevitably started. That doesn't right it's right or just but the sheer hypocrisy of views is staggering.

Probably been covered already, but if Putin launched a nuclear attack, wouldn't there be nukes on their way to Russia before his had even landed? If so - I really don't see what he stands to gain from actually launching any sort of nuclear attack.

I do think he's lost the plot, but surely that would be stupid, unless I'm wrong about how the nuclear response would be to him launching a missile. Does he just think the west are cowards?

Nah

If they want to join we should let them in surely? (assuming they can pass the normal entry criteria).

Stability is good. Invading neighbouring countries because they are a bit weak is bad. Ask post-Putin Russia to join as well.
Exactly. Just need large groups of countries to work together and things can just settle down. There's just no reason to be getting into wars for any developed country.

Good post

I’m in Bradford. A nuke would brighten the place up. In all seriousness though if he just dropped the one on London then would the whole Uk be done for?

No. As I understand it (based on something posted earlier in this thread) the damage and subsequent fallout wouldn’t even reach the midlands.

He’d be in some bunker in Siberia I guess.

A hopefully hypothetical question….it turns out Putin is serious about launching a nuclear missile into the North Sea, the only way he worn do it is if Ukraine surrender….what’s everyone’s stance on that? Urge Ukraine to surrender or keep on fighting and go nuclear?
Here we go
Like a mag coming in here and asking "would you take getting relegated if you could win the league cup?"

The Canal was captured by the Russians on the first day of the invasion and the water started flowing again on Saturday. There's more to this than NATO.
That canal was mentioned in the youtube video I posted again earlier in the link below. If anyone wants to know a bit more and has 30 mins, it's well worth a watch. As I said, it's informative for the likes of myself who weren't really up to date on the past history and certainly an eye opener.

It suggests it may also possibly be about the 2 richest locations of shale gas in Ukraine that they were going to allow Shell/Esso access to. Because Russia attacked Ukraine in the past then Shell/Esso pulled out and the Russians now have Donbass region near one of those locations.

It's also possible that the Ukraine economic sea zone that contains 2 trillion cubic metres of natural gas which has now been reduced dramatically due to the Russian's taking of Crimea which took an estimated to be 80% of the oil and gas reserves.

Also mentioned is the port city of Sevastopol in Crimea that is one of the few year round ice free ports and how it's valuable. It makes you wonder and I could well believe these are also part of the reason Russia is doing all this and certainly not for the reason of defending Russians from genocide and de-Nazify Ukraine.
