Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

Financial director for Gazprom, Russia's state owned gas/energy company and largest company in Russia by revenue, found dead by suicide in St Petersburg.
Or ‘Suicide’

Jesus. I wonder what kind of pressure he was under, looking at the impact of the sanctions.

I am not comparing his situation to the violence and oppression facing the people of Ukraine, but this is another family torn apart by Putin's needless aggression.

Honestly didn't know. It's still a strange set up.
The whole thing is a strange set up. Chechnya fought two wars to gain and then unsuccessfully maintain independence from Russia, during the second one the father of the current leader of Chechnya switched sides and offered to help Russia, was made president of the Chechen republic and then got assassinated by Chechen islamists and now his son is the head of the Chechen Republic.

Kadyrov is by all accounts not a “nice” person.

Any mod able to comment why this isn't in the normal forum?

I don't talk politics crap but I like to read and share about what is going on in this situation. Aye it may have some political jibber jabber now and then but surely overall many people who won't even venture into the Politics forum may well read the thread to stay up to date and join in if it was in the normal SMB forum?
Because certain posters would squeal if it wasn't here.

Chechens normally hate them, as has been said they must be getting paid an absolute fortune for a non-trustworthy force, would laugh if they flipped sides, I wouldn’t put it past them

Got a link?
It’s in Russian but aye, sure they’ll be an English version soon enough.

The circumstances of the death of the Deputy General Director of the Unified Settlement Center of Gazprom for Corporate Security, whose body was found in the prestigious village of Leninskoye in the Vyborg District of the Leningrad Region, are being established. A note was found nearby, law enforcement officials told 47news. A month earlier, the body of a top manager of another division from Gazprom's orbit was found in the same village. Both of the now deceased previously worked at Gazprom Transgaz.

Updated my post because it wasn’t well written. You’re right, the position of Chechnya is likely only maintained because Putin keeps Kadyrov comfortable and Kadyrov in turn keeps the Chechen islamists from the door.

Having gave this considerable thought over the weekend, I am now convinced that provided an act of God doesn't curtail my existence..as a man in their mid 30's I will live to see Putin hang for this invasion. He may , of course, pre-empt it with his own bullet.

There is no conceivable alternative, in my view.

If he had attacked a NATO country, maybe. I think it's more likely he'd be killed by his own men. Attacking a NATO country means the US gets involved, which means swift escalation to nuclear.

I'm not comparing Putin to Hitler (though there are parallels indeed) but if Germany had atomic weapons of the kind used by the US on Japan, I suspect he would have launched them before killing himself.

If Putin is backed into a corner and sees death or imprisonment as his only future, he may well go nuclear.

Anyone else found themselves struggling to focus on anything other than this for the last few days?

Not in an attention seeking "I'm so worried its going to effect me" kind of way, just constantly feeling the need every 5 minutes to check what's going on?

Can't remember the last time anything triggered that kind of response over the course of a few days
Same focus issues for me and the last time was Covid went it started kicking off, especially in Italy 😞

I suppose it's the thought in the back of my mind that a few bad decisions could end up with this kicking off on a larger scale.

That's on top of the concerns I have about the knock on effect on the financial situation of myself and no doubt millions globally that this already has and could end up having! It's f***ing shite to be honest and just when you think you're over COVID and BREXIT f***ing life up for many, this comes along and smacks you right in the balls (or fanny for the lasses)

Can’t stop following it, practically had the news rolling constantly when I’ve not been otherwise occupied.
