I think the change in leadership in Germany and the history of WW1 and 2 plays a massive part.
Interesting read of when the initial conflict started in 2014 and Merkel was in charge.

I don’t see it as insincere if that’s what you mean. The two sets of people are very close culturally. Anything that reminds them of that and unites them is a good thing.
The best thing about Twitter is that it constantly reminds us about ordinary people being affected by the power games of a small elite of bloodthirsty politicians.
The official line is that Germany doesn’t export weapons to crisis regions as “a matter of principle”. Merkel’s government flouted this principle multiple times, but this is a new government that is trying to turn the principle into a legally binding part of the constitution.

You’re right in a sense, but it hinges on that senserity. I wonder if Russia set this up for Ukrainian grannies in order to end the fighting and death sooner, how it would be perceived. Don’t answer that, we already know.

His international respect has never had anything to do with hard power, let alone military power.
His power lies in his capacity to embed himself in the affairs and finances of wealthy nations, like our own, which meant Russia has only ever faced appeasement and slaps on the wrist while he rules in his own backyard like a despot. And he would never have faced any international consequences for it if he'd just kept that up.
The fact that he has forgeone all that investment to roll the dice on a military that no super power was ever really that worried about (basically untested in war, most of the military actions in the border wars last decade was done by partisans and special ops and in Syria its just been firing artillery at cities) sort of suggests he's just losing it.

to be fair, they pulled the plug on Nordstream 2 very very early, before most countries had formulated their press releases. As the powerhouse of the EU, anything the EU says or does is effectively Germany saying/doing. But despite that they are not coming out of this with much credit so far, and as the largest economy in Europe should be far more involved.
