Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

I doubt history will look too kindly on him tbh. He's been telling Putin if he brings it on his people are ready for it while running around with his hand out for financial and military assistance, he got all that.
What would you have him do in this position?

What a terrible prospect it must be to be a reservist sent to defend Ukrainian cities.

You've not handled a firearm for 30 years and your arthritis is giving you gip

The ruskis had massive air superiority before they struck the air defenses and airports.

The choice seems to be

a. die on the road being bombed or strafed by ruski aircraft.

b. die in hand to hand fighting after days/weeks in a strange city

c. starvation when the Ukrainian military eventually collapses

I'm not a religious man but my heart goes out to those poor souls sent off to fight a fight they'll never fully comprehend.

Kiev will have Russian tanks in the centre in next few days but then what do they do? The world has moved on. It isn’t 1950s any more. People have got used to travel, freedom, they have mobiles and internet. It is a nightmare unfolding but I haven’t lost hope for the people of Ukraine.
I’m usually a cynical bloke but this is an existential crisis that could plunge us into darkness or could be over if things happen differently. Also could be years if miserable stalemate for Ukrainians.
So so sad.

I don’t know what Putin is thinking is the endgame to this.

Even if he walks into Kiev, Kharvik and Lyiv and takes a PR win they won’t have taken the country.

A tiny proportion of the Ukrainian armed forces, police, civil defence force and national guard will have been lost. He won’t hold 99% of the country.

Zelensky could flee and rule from exile. If not Putin still is going to struggle to put in a puppet government or sham elections in a country of 50 million people who even before this were 84% unfavourable towards the Kremlin.

He is going to be in there for years fighting widespread disobedience and most likely a major insurgency even if he does ‘take Kiev’ relatively quickly

I would be shitting myself. I would be a gibbering wreck but I would certainly do it. It is your home, it is where your family live it would be worth dying for.
So so glad I live where I live at the moment.

Are you talking about Ukraine's leader?
Its people like you who won't be remembered kindly

People saying putting boots on the ground or bombing campaigns by the U.K. military as a serious suggestion right now have been playing far too many video games. One wrong move by NATO and we plunge into WWIII. This whole thing is absolutely heart breaking. One can only hope there is a coup d’etat and Putin is removed by his own people. It’s such a delicate situation. All us mere mortals living in safety can do is help stop the spread of disinformation, harass our elected representatives to get refugee routes opened up ASAP, donate to groups that can get aid to the people that need it etc…

It is perplexing to say the least

They are happy to play the long game.

Remove Ukrainians from power now, install their own leaders to run Ukraine and then claim they never took it over, while Russian military stay to do some 'peacekeeping'. In the next 10 years Russia would announce that they consider Ukraine to be an independent territory. 5 years after that it becomes part of Russia.

It's not a job I'd apply for but he could have called on the guilty National Guard outfits to stop hindering OSCE monitoring, stop shelling separatist areas, adhere to the weapons de-escalation agreed with the ceasefire agreement. It might have eased tensions a bit.

and from the Financial Times re their rocketing output post-Covid rate:
"China’s output leapt 18.3 per cent year on year in the first three months, the fastest rate since records began in the early 1990s."
Bottom line is it only serves to make one wonder..
But it's growing from a really low point when covid was hitting, so it's not exactly booming
