Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

Some facts - Since the dissolution of the USSR, Russia had a large military / naval base in Crimea. In 2014, the US overthrew Ukraine's government, aiming to make Ukraine an outpost for NATO or NATO's interests, and to kick Russia out of Crimea, which is an exceedingly valuable strategic point on the Black Sea.
In response to the US-orchestrated coup, Crimea, which had tried to leave Ukraine and rejoin Russia for decades, lawfully chose to join Russia. And the heavily Russian-ethnic regions of Donetsk and Lugansk in eastern Ukraine declared their independences from Ukraine and also sought to join Russia (but Russia didn't accept them).
This infuriated the US and NATO, which then proceeded to funnel weapons into Ukraine and train Ukrainian troops and also Nazis, and encourage Ukraine to not stop trying to take Donetsk and Lugansk back by force. Years ago, Ukraine also signed the Minsk accords, under which Ukraine agreed to grant Donetsk and Lugansk autonomy within Ukraine. But Ukraine never upheld the agreement and continued to try to retake Donetsk and Lugansk by force.
After 8 years of Donetsk and Lugansk being brutalised by Ukraine, Russia decided it'd had enough and finally recognised the independence declarations of Donetsk and Lugansk, and agreed to protect them, from Ukraine's attacks.
As Russia moved forces into Donetsk and Lugansk a day or two ago, the shelling of those regions by Ukraine's army stopped for a while. That was the first calm those regions had had in years. But then, for who knows what reason, Ukraine started heavily shelling those regions again, and shelled them all last night and today. And this time, Russia's military was in those regions. In response, Russia had launched missile strikes and some other operations against Ukraine, taking out Ukraine's air defences and airforce, as well as other military targets.

Fuck me

To reform the Soviet Union
His ego and his legacy

I dunno, it just doesn't seem to stack up. All of this death, destruction, the political crisis, the risk to his economy and to his country, the untold stress that he has caused himself, the fact that he can't possibly come out of this as a winner, I just can't weigh up what he is set to gain, whether and ego trip or expanding Russia's territory, against what he is risking losing.

Just seems like there is something else at play. Surely the entire invasion has been discussed by his cabinet and it isn't just happening on the whim of one 69 year old bloke ?

The "Boots on the ground" are soldiers mate. In their eyes they are doing their job. It's what they do. It's what I did as a serviceman. Do as you are f***ing told. They probably hate it as much as some of our lads that were in Iraq. They are probably thinking "what the fuck am I doing fighting this f***ing war, that has fuck all to do with me.
Its the Politicos that need stopping.
Cut the head off the snake mate.
Too idealistic, the Ukrainian people have no option to cut the head off the snake, all they can do is kill or be killed. Personally I hope they do a lot more of the former.

I thought his own Security Council advised him against it.

He's putting the Soviet Union back together. For a certain segment of Russian society, those were the glory days. He's a product of the USSR and I doubt he ever gave up - or will give up - the dream.

Nobody is saying that war and killing isn't inevitable at this point. Rather, that it's strange to cheer the deaths of young lads, rather then wish for it to be settled without bloodshed.

Hopefully this can be the start of getting everything Russian out of our country. Their money, their media, the property owned by Russian oligarchs and Putin supporters etc.

I’d boot that Russian lad out of the HOL immediately. Not because he’s Russian but because of his family KGB ties.
Good luck with this project.
Won't happen. The Germans won't even sanction kicking the Russians out of the Swift system. Far too many vested and diverse interests in the West.
Nordstream 2 has made the Germans impotent if they weren't already, unfortunately for them they'll be saddled with the majority of the refugees
