Apologies if this fellas tweets have already made an appearance on this thread. They give a running commentary on Putin's speech as it happened:

Just that I can see parallels:

only cos you want to

USSR putting missiles into Cuba was a response to US missiles in Italy and Turkey (ie, members of NATO)

in the present time -
have the Americans stationed ballistic missiles in the Ukraine - no
does America have any ballistic nuclear missiles stationed anywhere in Europe - no

this is not a re-run of the Cuban Missile Crisis - this is Putin trying for USSR 2.0

America's initial response

US President Joe Biden is to prohibit "new investment, trade, and financing by US persons to, from, or in" the two breakaway regions recognised by President Putin.

The order will "also provide authority to impose sanctions on any person determined to operate in those areas of Ukraine," White House spokesperson Jen Psaki

Doesn't exactly scream the "mother of all sanstions", does it?

Putin is playing chess. The west is sitting with its fingers in its ears going “lalalalala can’t hear you”.

They said that if he invaded. He hasn't.

Yet.

You are correct. I just have my doubts that the west will do what is necessary because of all the dirty money and political tendrils Russia have in the west. Germany don't seems to have said much. Although someone did suggest that may be due to propaganda reasons that would play into Russia's hands domestically, which I can see.
