Putin and Macron have agreed to talks tomorrow to try and find, again, a diplomatic solution so that’s probably it off for another day

They have just built a naval base in Australia, what the fook for? Do China see that as a declaration of war? what if the Russians built a naval base in Cork? that would piss us off, but why not? when we build bases in other countries across the globe.

Well if you want to be accurate, first of all it's Britain that has invaded or fought against most countries in the world, not the US (so far anyway). And secondly you don't know much WW2 history. The Russians signed a non aggression pact with the Nazis, dividing up Europe between them and subsequently attacked Poland, Finland etc. So the Russians started out as aggressors in WW2, not anybodys saviours, although that came later only because of developments really, not by their nature, after they were attacked by Germany.

The West's interests, as democracies, are best served by siding with the Yanks, for now anyway, but nobody is claiming that they are saints, far from it.

Russia

Syria, Afghanistan, Georgia, Balkans (as part of peacekeeping), Crimea.

USA

Iraq 2x, Afghanistan, Libya, Serbia, Somalia, Grenada.

It's known as strategic tension, a ploy to sow fear and/or harm among an enemy's civilian population.

Although the perceived threat is bigger in Ukraine, there are far more harmful examples of strategic tension going on right now, eg state backed terrorism in the Middle East, Asia and Africa, economic sanctions specifically targeted to hurt the civilian populations of Venezuela, Yemen and Iran.

I thought it was Vietnam that liberated Cambodia after which the entire Vietnamese went on half rice rations to feed the starving Cambodians. Cambodia was left alone by the West because they were friends with China whereas the Vietnamese were friends with Russia.
 
The OSCE website is publishing daily reports on ceasefire violations, unsurprisingly they tell a different story to our media.

What a lot of people don’t seem to consider is that much of the Ukraine is populated with Russian speakers. When you walk around Kiev it isn't Ukrainian you here people speak. Russia has in interest in that part of the world and we should acknowledge that in any talks.

The Russians spent the majority of the 1930s trying to form alliances against the Nazi's with Britain and France which we refused. This included instructing national communist parties to support social democratic and Liberal parties against fascist ones. The Soviets were the only European power to supply any real material aid to the Spanish Republic in the civil war, which they only stopped in order not to upset Britain and France, who did nothing to stop Germany and Italy, also supplying the Chinese nationalists after Germany and Japan formed an alliance. Also the Soviets were the only country to offer assistance to the Czechoslovaks (the last democracy in Eastern Europe) against Germany. The Czechoslovaks refused after being asked to by the French (though Benes said he wouldn't have if he'd know about The British betrayal being planned for Munich and the subsequent betrayal by Poland and Hungary who happily carved up bits of the country for themselves).
Molotov-Ribbentrop was a necessity for the Soviets who firstly didn't think that the Western allies would do anything to stop the Germans invading Poland (he was right, we sat behind the Maginot line refusing to launch an offensive) and secondly worried that Germany would be able to use Poland for offensives into the Ukraine- ditto Finland and the Baltics (which the Germans were planning to do).
The Soviets saw the dangers of Hitler's Germany (and Japan) long before anyone else did or at least before anyone tried to do anything about it.
