Alex Neil - New head coach confirmed

Who cares, quite frankly?

Priority shouldn’t be about getting 40k in just because a ‘name’ manager has been appointed and instead in appointing the right head coach. And that patently wasn’t – as someone touted was a good reason here earlier – because we bought into the Roy Keane Pet Rehab & Unfinished Business Project.

There was 39,000 at the weekend – the Defoe boost – and we still got turned over by the bottom club.
We lost it due to gutless players and ridiculous caretaker management, a strong personality with an ounce of a football brain would have won that game.
Money is priority when we are stuck down the bowel of English football, we don’t go up this year we are fooked.

We're a League 1 club getting Alex Neil, why are people spitting their dummies out? Surely this is a rather ambitious appointment? People's judgements are massively clouded by Keane falling through, for reasons unknown to us all. Back our Baldy master or piss off permanently, please?
Well said Karlos.

Using that logic… Bobby Moore was probably the best midfielder this country has produced. He was an absolutely bobbins manager.

Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger both played less than 100 games at lower league levels. I’d say that Alex Neil had a better playing career than them.

And yet despite their lack of playing success, Mourinho has won 25 major trophies and Wenger 21 in their careers.

Go figure, eh?
You are comparing a man sacked from Norwich and Preston to Wenger and Mourinho?

We're not hopeless but a ton of shit decisions throughout the years have landed us in this position, and hopefully we've finally got an owner and a set-up that might get us out of it but there wont be any magic bullets. This isn't FM. I personally believe that appointing Neil over Keane was the right decision to make. I simply cannot see the basis for people preferring the contrary, apart from nostalgia.
It was always very simple and comes down to Trust. I think with Keane, we would have seen an overt effort to improve transparency and rebuild bridges.... With Neil all we've got is another competent manager who will do as he is told and everything above his pay grade will remain as dubious as f***.

Keane, clearly. If you check every new manager thread ever on this forum it follows the same pattern. Everyone is horrified at the quite clearly dire appointment (Grayson, Parkinson, Johnson etc) before then convincing themselves they are going to be fantastic. They’re always shite as these people are nobodies, what has Alex Neil ever achieved in football? A lower league Scottish plodder who’s career highlight was playing for Hamilton Academical.

Compare that to one of the best midfielders of his generation who dragged this club from the bottom of the championship. This is just so tinpot and typical of this ownership.

Daniel Farke described his Preston as one of the best pressing sides in England. Think we are gonna be in for a pleasant surprise with Neil.
Or we’re not…but it’s insane to get over emotional when we haven’t even seen what he’ll bring to the squad! I’m really hoping he brings high press/tempo to SAFC…isn’t everyone bored to tears watching the way these squad have played football the last umpteen years?!?

He was sacked at Norwich for not doing as he was told. Fergie backed him in it anarl.

Phew. As I say unlike many I am really chuffed with Neil. I was happy with Ross but very disappointed with Parko and Johnson. Neil will be a good appointment (albeit a week late) but a 3 month deal would take the gloss off it. Thanks for the update.
So they cant even get the length of his contract right. Nowt surprises me anymore!!

If true I think it's a sensible announcement

Get him in until the end of the season on league one manager wages. If he doesn't get us promoted then we look at him and other candidates again

On the flip side if he does get us promoted then he can command a championship manager wage and we are better off

Who should we have got in your opinion ? Which magical manager out there would come to Sunderland in league 1 and get us instant promotion?
Keane was the only realistic choice who would of lifted the whole club...fans and players.
He clearly wanted the job but its obvious that Speakman and Madrox tried to screw him over.
How come the mags get the world's richest owners and will go on to establish themselves as a top team we get Donald etc and languish leagues below with nothing to look forward too except Akex f***ing Neil!
We are going to lose a generation or more of supporters
