Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

They are more just intelligence and military experts. A lot of it leaked from US and other reports. But I like the term
I wish I could claim credit for the term but it popped up on a LRB podcast where the Economist's military expert was predicting 22 Feb. Infuriatingly narrow considerations and yet he's convinced it's going to happen.

Sounds ridiculous to suggest anyone could predict a specific date but the idea they can predict a window is hardly far fetched.

It’s costing Putin a fortune to have 100k+ men on the Ukraine border so clearly he won’t want to do that for long for cost and also morale (Months away from family before they even get started)

Plus the ground conditions are well known and being Putin is a militaristic leader and they have experienced military generals It’s unlikely they would go in at any time other then the optimal one for victory.

I see it’s headlines today anyway but I think the timing of when it would likely happen is well telegraphed due to the above being well known

You know my opinion, I think the whole charade is ridiculous.

There is no logical reason for Putin to invade Ukraine but there are a load of people working for think tanks funded by Lockheed, Raytheon and the like telling us all about his evil plan to rebuild the Russian Empire through force.

The media is buying into it by reporting all the scare stories but saying very little about the discussions to finally resolve the civil war in Ukraine which we should remember is not over but on hold.

Merits of the rest of your post aside, and whether this is being whipped up by the media/arms industry etc etc, the bit in bold isn't true. There is a long history of Russia/Ukraine relations that you can point to as a reason for Russia to want to invade Ukraine. Indeed, they have done so already in 2014

Is that the logic?

If they found the logic in 2014, I would say there is probably logic for them invading in 2022
There is a difference, Russia gave its reasons for invading Crimea and engaged in a massive internal propaganda campaign to get the public to support it.

It's been adamant it doesn't want to invade Ukraine and neither has it been trying to gain public support for an invasion. In fact it's been pretty clear it would like to see Ukraine continue as an independent state along the lines of Finland.

I'm sure it could come up with a reason if it secretly wanted to invade but it would have negligible support for an occupation and be engaged in a perpetual militant opposition even without assistance from NATO. The only real hope of a democratically elected pro-Russian leader would require Donetsk and Luhansk to part of a unified Ukraine but with Russia supporting the separatists, that doesn't appear to be a logical end goal either.

dont worry everyone Truss will kick them into touch.....

From BBC....

Truss was pressing for Russia to pull its troops back from Ukraine's borders and Lavrov was arguing that they were on their own national territory, .

"You do recognise Russia's sovereignty over the Rostov and Voronezh regions?" Lavrov asked, referring to two Russian regions.

After a brief pause, the paper says, Truss replied: "Great Britain will never recognise Russia's sovereignty over those regions."

"Great Britain's Ambassador to the RF [Russian Federation], Deborah Bronnert, had to step in, delicately explaining to Ms Truss that the two regions [Rostov and Voronezh] are indeed Russian," Kommersant writes.

(in Russian) this response from Truss: "During the meeting it seemed to me that Minister Lavrov was talking about a part of Ukraine. I have made clear that these regions [Rostov and Voronezh] are part of sovereign Russia."

It is possible that Truss had been thinking of Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk regions, where Russian-backed rebels control territory.

She is an embarrassment

The thought of clowns like Truss and Johnson negotiating at diplomatic level is frightening.

This is so worrying, we’re just sitting around watching this happen.

There’s a report out that Putin needs a handful of moves and he will be ready. So any day now and we have no chance of stopping it

Dont want to come over as a surrender monkey here but if they do go in we need to step back as far as possible. Ourselves and the EU will have no chance of stopping them and if the Americans go in as well the shit really hits the fan.

Best hope for the Ukraine is a guerrilla warfare using the experience we all have from Afghanistan.

That kind of thinking is exactly why Russia continues to do this. They are given free reign and the West rolls over. Why exactly? NATO out flanks Russia in pretty much every respect. The US alone do massively with a military budget 45x the size. But Russia can run riot why the West tries to appease

Fuck me that is absolutely unbelievable:lol:

How many countries in Europe have they invaded/occupied?

Unless you believe they have an inherent right to try and rebuild the USSR they quite clearly frequently occupy other sovereign states without recourse

Yugoslavia and Kosovo.

The second sentence comes straight out of anti-Russian propaganda.
