Central Defender
I don't necessarily think that Keane is the answer and it would be great if KLD pulled a rabbit out of the hat that gets us all excited. However, I don't quite agree with some of the criticisms on here.
- People say that he couldn't work under a DOF. He's only been in the top position himself twice (us and Ipswich) over five years, working as an assistant (under O'Neill and Paul Lambert) for six. Seemed fine enough with that.
- I'm guessing here, but you'd think that his assistant manager roles would have had more of a coaching focus.
- Yes, he spat his dummy at the end of his time with us, but he has also gone on record regretting that.
- A big part of his demise with us was poor recruitment (discounting that great first window), and - according to Andy Reid - bringing in the likes of Chimbonda because the squad was 'too nice'. The current set-up would hopefully over-rule such knee-jerk mistakes. But he'd have to buy in to that.
- Also worth remembering that he is still only 50, so nowhere near as long in the tooth as Sam or Colin, and with plenty to prove.
Still lots of reasons why he may not be the right man for the job, not least his managerial failures. But the current system might actually get the best out of him. Perhaps the biggest factor could be what the broader coaching team would be. Would that be decided by Speakman or Keane? Or perhaps a bit of both? I could certainly see him being impressed with the set-up and giving it a go as unfinished business.
