County Cricket 2022

One thing I have noticed under the North/Franklin regime is how fitter and more athletic the team look especially in the field. I know it's about runs and wickets but senior players like Lees look in better condition as do some younger players such as Trevakis.

They undoubtedly are but that's the remit of the new fitness coach not Franklin.
Have you noticed an improvement in the team though…?
Yes but that's down to recruitment of senior players e.g. Lees, Raine, Eckersley which was necessary after the sanctions and predated Franklin. More recently Bedingham looks a superb capture but Dickson, Coughlin, and to a degree Borthwick, less so. Franklin has been here 3 years and no academy players have come through -Carse and Potts predate Franklin.

But by your opinions then others get credit for the positives but Franklin gets the stick for the negatives.

The latest sky sports cricket podcast is a excellent listen Discussing Ashes and the fall out, season structure etc etc. Mind you its amusing listening to them dance round the 100 and you cant help but think they opinions would differ if it wasnt broadcast by there paymasters

As @wayne entwhistle no9 says, you can’t criticise him for the negatives but not give credit for the positives. From a purely ‘eye test’ basis - we’re on an upward trend in terms of improvement on the field in all facets of the game.

In terms of the players who’ve been a success, even if he didn’t sign them, there had to be an acceptance that his input has allowed them to flourish.

Promotion this season would mean he’s done a cracking job IMO.

The bulk of the current team were proven players before they came to Durham.
I've given credit to those responsible for the positives and criticised Franklin for a lack of academy progression. Promotion this season would be rightly attributed to him.

I definitely think that he could have been more positive with Trevaskis in championship cricket especially over the past 2 seasons. I know it's difficult to play a slow bowler in April in England and probably at the Riverside all season but with Eckersley at 6 I think they could have developed Trevakis as an all rounder possibly batting at 7 or 8 and still played 4 frontline seamers.

Yes,Trevaskis finished top of the batting averages,a bit flattering but proof that he's no mug with the bat. Poytner's early season inclusion stunk of nepotism to me and sowed my first doubts about Franklin.

Should that criticism not be directed more towards the bloke in charge of the academy
John Windows is the senior coach in the Academy and has been for the past 20 years so nothing has changed there.I'm assuming Franklin selects the 1st team squad and therefore determines who progresses to the first team.
We clearly differ on the merits of Franklin. Best leave it there.

I’m not sure we do differ, I’m not putting forward the defence for Franklin - I’m merely pointing out (along with @wayne entwhistle no9) that perhaps you’re not being totally fair with your condemnation of his ‘performance’ up to this point.

I’m not panning John Windows either, clearly he’s still got plenty of credit in the bank for what he and we have achieved in the last twenty years - but we’re in unprecedented times given what FTECB did to us in 2016 and so I’m minded to give everyone at the club - coaches, management, etc - a bit of leeway with regard to what they’ve had to deal with. It was inevitable there’d be a slowing down of the youth production given the drastic cuts that we made (and some would argue had to make) following the restrictions that were placed upon us.

We’ve effectively had to hit the hard reset and up to now, in what has only really been two ‘proper’ seasons under Franklin I think we’re heading in the right direction. How much of that is down to Franklin directly is anyone’s guess, I’m not really interested in drilling down and arguing that exact detail myself because it’s impossible to truly say, but I stick by my comment that if we get promotion this year, he’ll have done a good job.
